Which Big Bore cal for LR sport/hunting?

Porker.

I ran some numbers on the 378 Weatherby Mag and this is what i found.

Using the barnes led free 300grain bullet with a BC of .555 and a velocity
of 2900 ft/sec (Not that hot) the results were==

@ 850 yards the 300 gr dropped 175.9" with a 200 yard zero. wind deflection was
49.8" (10 mph cross wind) and energy was 1855 ft/lbs.

@ 1000 yards bullet drop was 277.6, wind was 81.5" and energy was 1389 ft/lbs.

So it looks like for all practical purposes 850 yards would be about the limit for
hunting Elk size game.

I like the big bores but it looks like the 338's are better at the longer distances.

My 338 Rum is good to 1100 yards on Elk. (1500 ft/lbs energy) and the brass or
loaded rounds are not hard to get.

That's a good neighborhood to be in !!!!

That should do the job.

Thanks all, much appreciated all your comments...I will now need to determine what reemers are available in this part of the world.... that, believe it or not, is also a serious consideration...

but I think I have all I need in this thread...bunch of calibers I have never even heard of!! will keep you posted:)

The black powder cartridge rifle competitors shoot .45-70 and similar .40 and .45 caliber rounds to 1,000 yards in their competitions. They seem to do pretty well at that distance with replical falling block rifles.

Trajectory like a rainbow compared to a big bore Weatherby. But works fine for competition at known distances. But maybe not the best choice if you're also wanting to hunt with it at long range.

I'm glad somebody mentioned the 45-70 as it has been reaching out and touching something way out there for over 100 years. Is it the best there is? No. Will it do the job? sure; depends on the job though. I will say I have had a bit of a hard on for the 404 Jeffery for quite the while now. You should be able to get plenty for that in Africa, though I have no idea as to its long range potential.
