What's your rifle lineup?

Sounds like a beautiful build. Awfully big for the whitetail I'm normally chasing... then again.. is there really such a thing as overkill? haha
Not really. Just for fun I shot a few WT's this year with mine using Hornday 250gr GMX running right around 2850 and if anything it did less damage than the 300 Rum or 7mm STW shooting 190's and 165's respectively.

I've pared down (my wife rolls her eyes) to:
Sako Quad 22LR (target)
Sako Carbonlight .243 (deer/antelope)
Tikka CTR .260 (LR steel)
Tikka T3X 270 WSM (elk)

Nice tight set. Add a 30 or 338 mag and you could hunt anything. How you you like the carbonlight? What bullet did you settle on for it? I've been considering one. Did you find it difficult to work up loads for the 270 WSM? I've been a big 300 WSM fan, but I've heard the 270 can be finicky.

I'm at a point where I need to thin the heard. My safe is full and I have a few duplicates. What is your handful (more or less) of preferred hunting bolt action rifles and calibers?

I think my planned core group of hunting bolt guns is as follows (in order of caliber) -

Savage 93 in 17 HMR, 17 gr VMAX
CZ 527 in 20 Vartarg, 32 gr VMAX
Savage 12 LRPV in 20 Dasher, 55 gr Berger
Savage MKII 22 LR, 40 gr CCI
ULA in 243, 90 gr Scenar
Colt Lite Rifle in 25-06, 110 gr ELD
Savage 16 in 6.5 WSM, 140 gr Berger
Remington model Seven in 7mm-08, 120 gr NBT
Custom Remington 700 in 28 Nosler, 195 gr Berger
Kimber Mountain Ascent in 308, 125 gr NBT
Kimber American 300 WSM, 180 gr TSX
Ruger 77 in 375 Ruger, 260 gr NAB

Considering buying a Bergara ridge 300 WM to replace the Kimber. Ease of finding ammo in remote places/threaded barrel interest in owning a Bergara is motivating that.

I like light rifles, but am finding out that they're not easy to shoot long distance with. What am I missing out on? Trying to have a well filled out bolt gun selection that I can have a rifle to hunt just about anything.

Thanks guys

Bob you have it well covered I would agree with loosing the 6.5 the 28 and 25-06 can do anything the 6.5 can do one of the 20 cals could go 204 ruger would do anything they can do factory ammo easy to find.I would be interested in the 7mm-08 if you want to thin that one. The 25-06 can do anything the 243 can do I love 25-06 shot three deer in anticosti with it one was just over 200yds sighted in an inch 1/2 high with 117gr factory load pow dead deer. You can down load it to poke a hole in a coyote without blowing it up.I'm no expert I like the 260 rem over the creedmore light hardly any recoil it will kill up to dangerous game The silhouette crowd has known about the ballistical magic of the 6.5 A squared cartridge for over 20 plus years I feel the creedmore was to sell guns with alot of hype and fan fair just my opinion hope this helps

I have come to the conclusion that I have too many rifles, some I have not shot for hunted with for more than five years, therefore I am thinning out my safe and focusing on my current hunting line up which is:

1. Winchester M52, 22 LR, Leupold VX III, 1.75-5X.

2. Remington 700 Stainless, 223 Rem., HS Precision Stock, Shilen barrel, Nightforce SHV, 4-16X.

3. Remington 700 Stainless, 308 Win, McMillan stock, factory barrel cut down to 21", Leupold VX III, 2.5-8X. This is my California rifle because it shoots 5/8" groups with Barnes, 150 gr TTSX bullets, its light and kills hogs, deer, and black bears with ease.

4. Remington 700, 280 AI, McMillan Stock, Lilja barrel, Leupold VX 6, 3-18X. This is my primary rifle for out of state antelope, deer, and elk. It also shoots 150 gr Barnes TTSX bullets very well (3/8 - 1/2")

5. Remington 700 Stainless, 338 Win Mag. HS Precision stock, Shilen barrel, Schmidt Bender fixed 6X. This is my elk rifle when I hunt in the Northwest corner of Montana, and Northern Idaho. Shots are often close less than 150 yards (in a few cases surprised off hand shots) and chasing elk through blowdown timber and snags is not my idea of a good time. 250 gr Accubond's put bulls down fast, not to mention, I seem to have Grizzly encounter every time I hunt up there. Nothing bad has ever happened, but it's comforting knowing I have 250 gr of bullet to use on a grizzly if it ever comes to that.

Here is my main bolt action line up today. It is fairly fluid but every time I tell myself I am paring down it gets bigger.

Rimfire

Ruger Skeleton 77/22 Sporter for ground squirrels and coons
Ruger Skeleton 77/22 Mag with open sights for treed lions
Ruger 77/17 Heavy Laminate Sporter for ground squirrels

Centerfire
Medium Heavy Rem 788 .222 for short to mid range ground squirrels/prairie dogs
Heavy Barrel Rem 700 with shortened barrel for "Truck Gun"/prairie dogs
Heavy Rem 700 VSSF .22-250 for prairie dogs
Heavy Rem 700 SPS .243 for prairie dogs
Heavy Ruger Tang 6mm for prairie dogs
Medium Rem 700 6mm-06 for long range coyotes/antelope
Sporter Ruger Skeleton .300 win mag for all-purpose big game
Medium Heavy Rem 700 .30-338 for long range big game
Short Barrel Skeleton Ruger 77 .35 Whelen with open sights for close range big game

I have a model 70 action sitting at McGowen for a .257 Roberts AI and a Rem 700 in the works in 6.5x280AI. Don't have a real big thumper so I have a donor model 70 stainless that is the next project on the list to be rebarreled to .358 Norma.

If I had to pick three centerfires I would go Heavy .223, 6mm-06, .300 Win Mag. As far as rimfires, I could do away with the skeleton .22 Mag but I really like it and it is super light and easy to throw in a pack for climbing after my hounds. Add in some ARs, rifles for wife and kids, shotguns, handguns, etc. and it starts to border on lunacy.

I sold off 15 rifles last year just to clear out the clutter. In down to what I consider my bare bones and now will add a few more as I can.
1-Marlin guide gun in 450 marlin- 325ftx
2- 2 ruger 10-22s
3- semi custom rem 700 223- 69smk
4- semi custom rem mod 7 7mm08- 140 accubond
5- semi custom rem 700 280ai- 168 vld
6- semi custom rem 700 308- 155 scenar
7- semi custom rem 700 300wsm- 200 accubond

I will add another 280ai and a 6x47 lapua or 6creed and possibly an ar10 in 308 and be done for anything I need from hunting to long range and training guns for my kids. I quit with the jack of all trades guns or buying just to have something and started getting exactly what I, wanted from the get go.

Hunter,

I am curious to know what you have used those 168gr VLD's on and how did they perform?

That's how Barnes like to be run - light for caliber, at warp speed. I'd heard of accuracy issues with the LRX line, sounds like you had no such issues.

jrkotz,

I have not had good luck with the LRX in my 280 AI. At reasonable powder charges they shot 2" groups. I had to really push this bullet with a very heavy charge of IMR 4350 to get it to shoot sub MOA. I was getting 3175 fps with a 26" barrel but seeing very alarming high pressure signs. Eventually I gave up on this bullet after spending a small fortune on various powders, bullets, and fire forming new brass...
