Whats your favorite RUM?

300 is my personal favorite, with monos being able to stand up to higher twist rates/ velocities I don't feel the need to step down to a 7 to shoot lighter bullets. Only have 1 right now (other two were changed to 30SMs) but it's a carbon barrel in an HS stock that weighs about 8#. TBAC 338 Ultra can, and it shoots pretty darn nice.

I run a 338 Edge for light class ELR, it's an easy button solution with ADG brass available.

PTG has a 6.5 RUM reamer that has been calling my name though....
There is a 6.5 badger which is a necked down 338rum

So, what is your favorite U.M. for hunting and why?
7, 300, 338, 375, edge, edge +p , other ?????

Why?

Is the extra powder usage worth the gain over wsm, wm?

What about increase in recoil? How heavy is your rifle? What about barrel life?

How much further can you shoot, how much more velocity do you gain in equal length barrels over wsm or wm? How long are you loading ?

In response to some of your other questions…..yes it's worth the extra powder. If your rifle is set up properly the recoil won't bother anyone that can already shoot a Win Mag, it's a bit more recoil but also smoother. My rifle is under 10lb all up and it's not at all bad to shoot. If barrel life is of importance, then this family of cartridges are not the go- but wearing out a barrel is a small price to pay for the enjoyment they bring. How many rounds you'll get will depend on how cool you can run it. The RUM's won't ultimately shot much further than the smaller magnums, but the longer point blank ranges from their flatter trajectories, and less wind drift add up to a real practical advantage when hunting, where a shot might have to be taken quickly at somewhat uncertain distances. Magazine length often limits load OAL if it's a repeater that's wanted, otherwise load single and seat as desired. Or get an extended magazine box.

On the 300, what speeds are you guys getting for the 215 hybrids, 230 hybrid target, 230 hybrid otm for a 26" barrel?

I'm wanting to punch some numbers.

I was liking the 338rum with the 250s and 300s but my suppressor is 30 cal, not 338. So the 300rum is my second choice. I was a little concerned about stability of the 230 target with the 1:10 twist, at my altitude it should be no problem, but if i ever go sea level hunting the berger calculator shows it slightly under "ideal"

I have a 300wsm 24" that shoots the 215s at 2900 and the 178 ahh at 3130, but was toying with chopping it to 20"-- if i did that then was interested in an u.m. I also have a 7rm, and 7wsm -- the 7wsm isn't really doing anything different than my 7rm so will probably sell that one off

I doubt I'd shoot out the barrel, but you never know.

I figure if I get a rum, I'll find the best load, and it its longer than mag length I'll look closer at a wayatts cfe9 to keep it a repeater.

Pending on Powder, I can run 215 to 3200fps - N-570. 230 Hy. 3050 - N-570.
H-1000 3100 - 215Hy. These are max stock mag lengths. My experience with the Hybrids o.a.l. have not been a issue.
Hope this helps. The 7RUM is the only one that is hard on barrels. And it's not bad around 7- 800 rounds. With proper barrel maintenance and not shooting it hot. And 800 to 1000 for the other factory Rums. My 300's shoot anything from
124HH at 4000fps to 150 and 165 at 3500fps and 230 at 3100fps.
You just need to get you one. 😃

300 RUM is my favorite.

Krieger 27" barrel, Beanland built Rem 700 that started life as a LSS.

Berger 210's at 3149 fps, Berger 215's at 3183 fps, and Hornady 212's at 3174 fps .

338 RUM Improved +P with a 35-40' shoulder. It equals the performance of the edge and LM but will feed into a Wyatt's box. I use Nosler brass. With 265 ABLRs I believe COAL is 3.85. The 338 offers the most efficient combination with a lot of bullet choices and it is not to overbore allowing you to get more out of your barrel. I have between 800-1000 rounds through mine and it shows little signs of wear. I think we will get north of 1500-1800 rounds through this barrel before we change it. My present pet load is 91 grains of H1000 over fed match primers @2775 fps running 300 OTMs from a 27 inch tube. I think this is about the best combination out there for hunting. Easily one of my favorite rifles.

In my sendero 300 with 230s, I get 3150. They are seared long and I run it single shot.
