Whats the longest shot you would take on a brown bear

Ol Red we have a few that will go 9' in Mondamtana…a few years back fwp, foot snared the grandpa and 10 years later the grandson (dna) grandpa weighed 980# and grandson weighed over a 1000# in the spring, regular giants for the lower 48. A bear the fwp shot last fall that weighed 790# squared 8'6" so those two related bears could have easily squared 9'….the gestapo tells us the bears on the east side of the Rocky's get larger than the bears on the west side. Not sure they have weighed one over 800# in the fall on the west side. And we know the fall weight is heavier than the spring weight. The food/ genetics at times produce a giant on the east slope. Most boars are 550-800 max here.

I think a .375 H&H is perfect for big brownies. I sold mine when moving south. It deserved to stay where the bears are huge. With the grizzly population increasing here, I did purchase a .338 WM. I have not heard of a 9 foot grizzly in WY.

Take a trip to the museum in Meeteetse……those two get pretty darn close if they don't exceed! I think both were taken near Meeteetse! memtb

Looks like I stand corrected on the size of some lower 48 grizz. Now if we could just get them delisted.

I remember a big Brownie mounted life size in the JC Penney Mall in Anchorage that was 11' and some inches. When I hear people talk about what pistol they carry for bear protection I smile. I carried a .41 Mag. I knew it was large enough to put myself out of my own misery. Only if the .375 did not do it's job.

Interesting conversation on this. Our little black bears around Colorado make most people nervous…. I can't imagine one of these beasts up close. I have only seen them live in a zoo. The black bears in the next enclosure looked like cubs compared to mama brown bear next door.

They had moved it to a room with a tall ceiling the last time I saw it. That's been a while, as I moved south in 1995.

I am trying a variation on my Mk V .340. I got some iron sights and solid steel see through rings/base.
Shooting 225's the see through are on at 30yds. It turns out there is very little head adjustment to go from scope to see through. We'll see how they work.

I tried them in the early '70's…..they were a big thing back then. They offered nothing over conventional base/rings except……the scope is much better than irons in dim light, I could no longer hit thrown targets using the see through's (couldn't find the thrown target inside the small window) and to use the scope required losing my "cheek plant" on the stock.

It took me a few years to fully come to absolutely hate them!

A scope is much better in almost all conditions…..especially low light. If you feel the need for irons as a means of back-up sighting options…..I highly recommend quality Quick Release base/rings. I've used them since the early '90's on a rifle that likely has more recoil than your 340….with zero issues. I have another scope already mounted and zero'd in a set of QR's. If both scopes fail…..I can simply remove the scope (s) and use my irons. I fervently hope things never get that bad!

We have some big black bears in New York - I think the record is around 700#. Thing is, most time they try to avoid you - if not surprised or with cubs. When hiking or camping we wear bells on shoes. Those that are killed by them are usually tormenting them.

The ones I found have a good size window and I can move back and forth and hardly break the cheek weld. this is the rifle I put them on. Like I said I will have to see how they work.
