I've only lived and hunted in Montana for 50 years. in every part of the state and all I ever needed was Rifle, Ammo a Sharp knife never had any issues with bringing home the meat. hunted everything from Turkeys to Bear. ?? Maybe I've been doing it all wrong? I'll be 63 by next hunting season and I'll still take my Rifle Ammo and my Trusty 50 year old Razor Sharp Case folding knife. we've split Many a Rib Cage and Pelvic bones in the field. Never was one for all the Fancy hunting gear. I like the KISS method best.

I live in the mountains and I don't pack anything but Gun Knife a little water maybe. usually have a creek in the mountains, don't need to pack extra stuff

The way I look at it. I'm not packing it all for 1 day. It's insurance in case for some reason I need to spend a night or 2.

well I guess it can happen, go for it. I always trust my skill so that it doesn't happen. been outdoors all my life, always anticipate what will happen next so I can Avoid mistakes.

In Oklahoma, the varmints are two legged and on meth. Sidearm definitely recommended unless you're hunting with an AR.

There are many good suggestions in the responses. I add one additional item to my pack. I am a senior and since I often hike alone and sometimes hunt alone in the mountains of AZ I always carry an ACR Res Q Link Personal Locator Beacon in my pack. They are not cheap but if you need emergency help in an extreme situation that one time will convince you that the price is right.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best . Oz's = lb's , lb's = pain , but it's better to be prepared then not . Things do happen that we aren't expecting even if we have spent our whole lives living in the woods , a twisted ankle from an unseen rock or root , a slip on snow , ice , or mud covered by pine needles or leaves , a bear around the corner of the trail ect . It was only last month that a couple in Ca. got lost for 3 days on a 1/4 mile walk from their home they had done the walk several times before , just took a different turn this time .

All these are great suggestions. Let someone know the area you are hunting and where you parked a vehicle. Try to meet them or contact them at a certain time. You never know when your back will give out. Ask me how I know.
It seems to me that many of the most serious missteps in the country that I hunt are likely to come along on the one day trip where nothing was expected to happen. Carrying a pack with options to survive an unexpected night out always seems like a good idea to me. There are a number of missing hunters in the Rocky Mountain area where the day trip turned into a never seen again case. Carrying extra gear that I did not expect to use at all has turned into a very good idea for me in the past. Things can happen that you do not expect, and can not avoid. I speak from personal experience.

Lot of good info here. In addition to some items mentioned i always carry a insect proof head net.
