1000 yard elk?......hummm..... There are many dedicated shooters on this site that can make this shot due to their attention to detail.

The First time you have to track a wounded bull down a steep canyon, then hall his quarters back up the canyon wall with a rope, you gain tremendous insight on how you would do things differently on the next hunt.

Again, there is one heck of a difference in a 750 yd and a 1000 yd shot. Past 600, some bullets are not worth a darn!

There are "better" 30 cal magnums either regarding ballistic performance or cartridge design…none of them have the sheer number of available options for factory ammo (which you mention as being important), none of them boast the number of different brass manufacturers and amount of brass produced for handloaders, not even close, no contest. Few cartridges, magnum or otherwise, can boast a comparable established track record of field use either, both hunting, military, and long range competitive target Shooting.

It's boring because it works. The .300 win mag is about the single most practical magnum there is.

I'd get a Lazzeroni Warbird. If you're going to handload. Plus no one shoots it these days so plenty of ammo available from John (Lazzeroni). It will smoke anything at 1K

Awesome cartridge, I just wish I would put an 8 twist barrel with it instead of a 12. Would be about the ultimate long range killer with heavy bullets.

I'm looking into my first magnum rifle. I'm needing a rifle at least 7mm in caliber, just in case I draw an Oklahoma Elk tag, the require at least .277 diameter to hunt elk. I'm wanting a rifle I can shoot bout to 1000 yards on game effectively. I'm planning to hand load, but would like factory ammo available as an option. This will be mainly a sit and shoot rifle so weight is not an issue. I currently carry a 13lb 6.5 all the time. What chambering would you guys recommend? If you have a rifle recommendation post that as well.

I shoot a 7x300 win mag which would be effective out to 1000 yds on an elk with a Berger 180 Hybrid. H-1000 would be the go to powder.

338 wm would be a good one to go with in my opinion.

Most underrated cartridge out there.

I'd go at least a .30 caliber for 1000 yard elk (28 Nosler would do fine as well). I would get a 300 PRC (I have one in a Seekins Havak PH2). If you hand load, a 300wm or a 300 PRC would be great. I would look into the 200+ grain bullets. I have taken an elk at around 750; it was a cow, with a 300wm and a 208 Amax.

Similar but different. 300 Win Mag loaded with H-1000 (79.5) gr, LRM primers. And Nosler 180 gr SPBT Blistic tip. Elk out to about 800+/- yds.
If weight is not a thing, might look at the BAUGARA HMR-PRO . BOUGHT ONE AND IS A BETTER SHOOTER THAN Win Mag I had before! Good luck with whatever you get/use! One Shot, one Kill

I think a lot depends on whether or not you're buying or building your rifle. For mostly whitetail with a big "maybe someday" opportunity to draw the Wichita Mtns hunt, my vote goes to 7PRC with 180 Bergers (VLD or Hybrid) if you're buying a factory rifle. If you plan to build, a 7RM or PRC with an 8 twist barrel and the same bullet or a 300WM with a 9 TW and a 215 Berger Hybrid (easiest to find quality brass for IMO). Depends on how you manage recoil. Good luck on the draw. Maybe one day we'll both get a chance. From Northeast OK.

My nephew just went through this conundrum. He found a discounted Proof 300 win mag at Scheels because they lost the box. It's nice! He just smoked a big Aoudad w it.

But, any dang ol 300 WM will shoot just fine. Short of Grizz, Nilgai, and maybe Mt Goat, it's perfect for anything in North America. (Yes, I know you can kill those three w a 300).

Go 300 win mag. The ammo is inexpensive and plentiful.

I will most likely never be afforded the opportunity to take a 1000 yard shot on an elk. Living in Oklahoma we only have one huntable population of elk and it's a once in a lifetime tag. All of my hunting is for whitetails with the potential for a 1000 yard shot if I set up everything perfectly. 600 yard shots are easily accomplished on this property and I've killed several between 500-600 with my .308 and 6.5 creed. My purpose for this thread is gaining info for one more rifle build/purchase that will be capable of making that shot as long as I am up to the task. Just do r want to waste money and time on a rifle that will not be capable of reaching my goal.

HMR-PRO. 300 Win Mag. Small bore 50 yd reduced for 50', shot at 100 Yds. Look at the rat side of target 3 per target. Cross hairs almost cover the Target
