I agree...with the 338..personally I'd build a 33 Nosler or a 338 Norma... you also do not have a heavy rifle..nothing to take care of Buffalo, elephant ect...I'd also suggest a 375 of some type, or even a 416. if your looking for gaps.

But if your set on building on a origin... 338 RCM...

By the way what does your 30-378 WBY shoot good with? Just curious...

It shoots rediculously good. .5 moa all day with a 168 TTSX at 3550. 80% of groups have been in the .3s with the best being a .122". I wish I had a use to do
Buffalo or elephant but I have enough western US trips planned to last me a lifetime

I've owned 3...and yep, they all shot 165 grain bullets great...don't shoot 180s to 230s...you will pull your hair out...

I had a solid 0.5-0.75" load with a 200 grn ELD-X at 3250. Just got away from the ELDs.

I always found a 375 useful in my battery. I have been on 6 safaris and half of those I hunted dangerous game...Alaska is another place to pack a 375...think about the bore diameter if you ever get bored

Very long time lurker. Have absorbed a lot of knowledge off this forum and wanted to jump in with something.

I am going to build a rifle and will likely be built off a bighorn origin action using a Pre-Fit barrel of some kind. The whole goal of this is to build it myself from scratch.

Here is what I have already...I know I pretty much have all bases covered but what does one more rifle hurt haha:

Weatherby Arroyo RC 30-378
Fierce Carbon Edge 280AI
Weatherby Vanguard RC 7RM
Rem 700 PSS 308
Rem Model 7s in 260 and 7-08 (I have twin 5 year olds and these will be their first rifles)
Ruger MK77 in 257 Roberts
Remington VSSF 22-250
Ruger 77/22 in 22 Hornet

I'm leaning towards a 6.5x284 as I have always wanted one but have also entertained a Sherman of some sort since I have read all the good things on this forum.

Thought about it...def won't be a 6.5 creedmoor just for the fact that it's about become a fact of the 10 people at the line at the same time as me 8 of them are shooting a 6.5 creedmoor. I know they shoot but I just would like to be a little different.

Only one out of the group that may hit the road is the vanguard 7rm. Bought it bc it was a stupid good deal. Everything else has sentimental value or has a specific purpose. This build is not about replacing but about adding. I live in Georgia and don't have available a range to heavily utilize a 338. My day to day range is 600 yards and I go to a 1000k range about 1-2 times a year to play.

Sentimental value is relative those who share that experience. Don't be surprised if grandkids down the pike ship those things off for cash. I am a financial manager, though, so that's probably why I'm saying get your money now lol. I'm also becoming a fan of minimalism to some degree.

The Hornet will save varmint pelts and cost less. You can kill anything else with a 338 and it's not overkill.

I had one load near a 1" with berger 210s...everything else I tried was greater than 1.5 MOA

I e thought about doing the same thing myself. Can't decide on caliber but I want something with a shorter barrel. In all likelihood it won't happen. Just no need.

The 270 SS looks mighty interesting

My 270 SS runs a 150 grain easily over 3100' with a 21" barrel.

You do know the origin action is only available in short action right? I would look at one of the ss or sst cartridges from shermanwildcat cartridges. I will build one of his wild cats one of these days.

I would also suggest the 6mm Dasher. Why fireform the 6mm BRX or 6mm BRA when you can get quality brass for the Dasher?

Bullets.com had Norma make a special run of Dasher brass. You can still get it at Bruno's in Phx.
