180 gr Nosler Accubond 2960 fps.
Had to have surgery 2 days into hunting season so I scratched this year.
This coming year Accubond again as its super accurate in one of my 300 win mags and the other likes ELDX 200 gr chrono shows very close to 3000 fps at muzzle.

150 gr ELD-X from 280 Rem
Factory Hornady Precision Hunter
MV=2820 FPS
Distance 265 yds
Estimated impact velocity = 2485 FPS

400 lb cow elk, stumbled 10 yds and dropped. Broke rib inbound, severed main artery just in front of heart, pierced front of both lungs. Bullet performed well.

Will use this again.

(1996) Special leftover permit in Teton N.P. (not at the refuge - but out in the hills with horses)
5-pt. bull elk, 60-yards
700 BDL .30-06, 165-gr. Nosler Partition, 2,750-fps

I made a mistake, the 300 win mag with 200 gr ELDX does not shoot close to 3000 fps,my 300 weatherby mag shoots close to 3000 fps
300 WM 200 gr ELDX magic spot shoots 2810 fps.
After I posted that figure I went to notes and made the correction.
Old age can do that to a person.

Pick the bullet that most correlates to a choice.

Also if you have a chance, tell us the muzzle velocity, and how did it do? Also note the impact velocity and range if you can.

Thanks for providing this info. As a long time elk hunter i'm trying to look outside my box and see what others are doing.
Last elk was shot with a 180 Nosler AB driven @ 3,400 fps 300 RUM impact at 491 yds. Bullet struck behind left shoulder exited low right right chest with bull falling in his tracks.

.300 win 200gr Nosler Partition; mv 3050fps. Small 6 point walking downhill at 300yds. Straight on shot into front of chest. Animal dropped instantly and never moved.

If you are doing everything write pass on what everyone else is doing. Most people do what the magazines or internet experts are doing. That means they are wrong over 85% of the time. Trendy does not trump engineering! The largest chunk of any group in modern times will almost always be doing things wrong because of how they fail to question the experts and the industry. Group think and trendy should always be avoided in any endeavor where a life is on the line! The animals life and giving it a painless dignified death is important too!

I love Berger bullets for paper punching but they are dreadful on an animal. The best bullets for hunting are the ones a target shooter would never use!

I voted for target/match grade because I used a .308" 175gn Berger Match VLD Hunting. Muzzle velocity about 2900fps and at 130 yards, Performed perfectly. I'll add that my wife's last elk was taken with a .277" 130gr Hornady GMX. Also performed well.

This years bull was shot with a 28 Nosler with 165 grain Sierra Gamechanger at 383 yards. MV was 3120. Shot was just behind his shoulder, he took a few steps and fell over.

just out of curiosity, can you explain what you mean by "dreadful?" Personally, I'm quite happy with my Berger bullet performance.

Last elk, 300 SAUM, 175 Barnes LRX, 3030 fps at muzzle. 340 yard shot, impact low front shoulder and through heart, no bullet recovery. Elk took two steps and fell over. Wife's was similar, same gun and yardage. broke both shoulders and went 10 steps. This gun and bullet has taken 8 elk in 6 years with all pretty much DRT results.

My last elk shot last fall was a large bodied 5x5 bull. The bull was quartering toward me at 410 yds. I hit him low in the chest just inside of the left foreleg. The bullet tore through both lungs and the heart. He jumped at the shot and ran about 25 yds before going down hard. 300 Weatherby using a 168 gr. Barnes TTSX. Muzzel velocity: 3350, Impact velocity: 2400 The wound channel was quite large and the bullet exited the far side and was not recovered.
