What type of bullet did you use on your last elk?

I shot this guy (my avatar) at about 80 yards. Muzzle velocity is 2950 fps, 7mm rem mag, 160 gr accubond. 1st shot through the lungs and he stood there like is that the best you got. Adjusted forward and put one through the onside leg and down he went...about another 150 yards straight down into a hole. 4 of my other elk were shot with a .338 225 gr speer spbt at 2500 fps from a 338 rcm...all 1 shot kills. My 1st bull a large 5 x 5 took 4 rounds from the rcm shooting 225 grain sst's...it was running through the timber and I may have been excited. All were shot on the Oregon coast.

Barnes 7mm Rem Mag VOR-TX LR 139gr LRX factory ammo. Muzzle velocity 3341 fps, and 267 yds. Broke one front shoulder & excited just in front of the off side shoulder. Rared up on it's back legs, flipped over & never moved again. Very little meat damage to the broken shoulder.

I think for this to have real value...the question of how fast the Elk went down - how many shots and -given good shot placement and less than optimum placement.

165 Accubond out of a Savage Model 99 in 300 Savage. Impact 2400 fps at about 100 yards. Not a big caliber and not long range, but last elk kill. Heavy body 5 pt bull facing my daughter head on. Shot high in chest. Bullet shattered spine and maintained about 75/80 percent weight retention. DRT.

180 Grain Nosler Partition at 2,985 FPS at muzzle from Custom Built 300WSM AR10 at 182 Yards. Broadside Chest pulverized heart and lungs then exited with exit hole approximately 3". DRT.

My last elk is my avatar. Shot with a 30-378 Wby. mag. 210 Berger VLD hunting bullet 3200 fps at muzzle, estimated impact velocity, 2611 fps. Range was 382 yards. Shot hit behind shoulder thru ribs, bull humped up & staggered, did not take a step & tipped straight over backwards(pretty steep where i was hunting). Did the gutless method, so don't know for sure what it did to the lungs & heart. I love this cartridge & bullet!

Oct 2018 in Arizona wilderness area at 487 yds (calculated). 24k wind left to right and snow/sleet/fog unable to get laser range due to precipitation/poor visibility with two different range finders. Worsening forecast for remainder of the hunt, last opportunity to harvest an elk that season. 11 degrees up across steep upslope ravine. .300 WM 180 gr. Barnes TTSX 2960 FPS MV elk did not drop, mortally wounded two additional close shots. Tracked 120 yd, no blood in snow 9,800' MSL, through one lung then liver. Found bullet inside hide opposite side. These animals are resilient. Entry wound 9" right of desired shot placement and 3" low. No Bueno. Bullet performed as expected, hunter did not. I lost a 7x7 bull 5 years ago due to poor shot placement in the same hunt area with the same load. 320 yd, the elk dropped, layed there for several minutes not moving while I gathered my gear. Got dark and by the time I could get over to it climbing over deadfall, It got up and ran off. 6" dark blood patch where he was laying. lost blood trail 30 yds up hill. The elk was found dead a week later down hill 1 mile away. In my opinion, all bullets demand good shot placement, however, monolythics are not forgiving like other bullets as they don't fragment. I continue to learn this the hard way. Has anyone else had similar experience with the mono's?

Mine was shot with a 180 Barnes TTSX MV 3250 out of my Sako 300Wby. The range was 250yds quartering on to me approximate veleocity on impact 2700fps. The bullet enteredthe shoulder and was recovered on off side weighing 175 grains. The Elk took 2 steps backwards and went nite nite.

.45 long colt in Ruger Blackhawk. Broad side 75 yards. 5 shots Bullets all recovered between hide and meat far side. One would have done it but with pistol ya shoot till ya run out.

Mystras I have not found the same thing. In my mind they were more foregiving. The deeper penetration damaged more as it continued through the animal.
