At 72 years old, I can shoot anything hunting, including my 338 Win Mag. Target shooting, I limit myself to a 6.5 Creedmoor unless it has a muzzle brake. At this time in my life, I am a real fan of muzzle brakes, especially my target guns.
Likewise as we are the same age. I'm turning 73 in July and still love to shoot my factory muzzle-braked .340 and .378 Wby mags. Also the .50 Beowulf with 18" bbl. I have a 3-burst lower I use on it for fun shooting. I reload 400gr Sierra for bear hunting. Thumper...

I don't think it's the hit to the shoulder that bothers me. I don't like making sure the stock is tight in my shoulder that I don't get hit by the scope. I like to be relaxed as possible when shooting.

I used to be that way…..I learned a different application of "grip" with my fist .375 H&H using a cheap scope! 20 rounds from the bench guaranteed at least 4 or 5 hits between the eyes and blood running down my nose!

I also learned "via "the school of hard knocks", that after the first two or 3 hits…..the others didn't hurt nearly as bad! I never was "tough enough" to intentionally allow myself to "take a hit" to achieve the point of numbness! memtb
