I have a Ruger American rifle in 243. It's a really nice rifle with very little recoil. I shot a deer with it at 250 yrds last season.

My suspicion both these were popular back in the older guys younger days
250 savage has almost no kick, 257 roberts mild also

I would go 6.5 Creedmoor, lots of cheap factory ammo, low recoil, tons of rifles chambered in it,

I was at the range twice this last week and lots of elderly gentlemen shooting this cartridge and loving their accuracy and lack of recoil.

Hard to not consider it

I just so happen to have a 257 Roberts in LNIB , I had forgotten all about it , thanks for bringing it up Heavy Iron . As far as the 6.5 creedmoore , I have tested this round and as much as I wanted it to I couldn't get it to do anything the 25-06 couldn't do or do better .

Another vote for the 6.5 Creedmoor. Recoil is very minimal, tremendous selection of rifles at the moment and ammo can be found almost anywhere. In a good rifle accuracy should be very good with plenty of energy to make those 500yd shots!
