What barrel twist?

That depends on the bullet weight/design you're going to use as they have different twist rate recommendations.

- Hammer Bullets recommends the 214 1:9" or faster and the 227 1:8" or faster. I know Steve did a lot research/test on them and hopefully he'll chime in with your concern on over stabilization.

- Cutting Edge bullets 200 lazer tipped HP recommends 1:9" or faster.

- Sierra bullets 230 HPBT recommends 1:8" or faster

- Berger used to advertise their 230 OTM as 1:9" or faster. But now it's 1:10" minimum.

I have a 27" Lilja 1:9" 3G on my .30 LARA. So far so good but due to school, I haven't had a chance to explore in extreme ranges yet.

I agree. I was talking more about he OP talking about using 180 to 212 gr for hunting aspect. I would recommend to the op to use heavier even for hunting but in the event of using a 180 gr in a 1:9?

I think any of the fast 30's will work for your intended purpose and would use a 1:9 twist. I'm going with just such for a custom long throated 300wm for the 215's.

I think when you start looking at 220 and above you need to weigh the velocity loss with the BC gains. Realize that the additional BC only shows up past about 800 yards give or take.

If I wanted to shoot the 230's I'd look at a 300 RUM or Lapua based 30's. Not only to get that magical speed but to not run so hard you shorten your brass life. These big boys would also be a benefit if Berger ever releases the long rumored 245 30 cal.

Magnum, rims on magnum cartridges vary in depth between manufacturers and even production runs and make for poor head spacing tolerances.

Yeah, I own two .300 win mag rifles, an HS Precision competition rifle and a Browning A-Bolt. Both are quite accurate - usually.

So.............are you telling me that shoulders on NEW brass DO NOT vary between manufacturers?
Come on, get real, once a rim or belt are made on a case they NEVER change, unless one bends them while sizing or other misfortune. True that some rims cause issue in rare circumstances, but rarely is it the brass at fault, it's generally the chamber that is out of spec.
I have seen dozens of headspace issues caused solely by headspacing off shoulders, seen very few caused by belts and rims, sorry but that's my experience doing custom builds for myself and others.
