What about .270 Winchester?

All this talk about .270 Win, and I just committed to buying a .270 WSM. I found it last night and agreed to buy it this morning.

I have been considering my buddies. If he comes down on the price a bit. It's worth what he wants. But not to me. And I know he doesn't like shooting it. And he got me on the last deal, we had. So now its my turn to get even. lol

Yep Love or hate them they work and very affective when used properly. The 270 (all not just winny's) are probably one of the most versatile calibers on the market. While i've only owned 1 win in my lifetime i have several weatherby's and wsm's. If i were in the win market and it liked the factory offerings in 130 scirocco's i'd buy a couple hundred rounds of it and hunt a long time with confidence. Use these in my 270's and 6.5's - kill everything from sheep to red stag.

270's just don't get much love these days with the new kids, but man they sure hold their own. Now I was a 30-06 guy as a kid, hunting brush covered areas in texas not much long range shooting yes the idea of a 30 cal was cool! Teen boys - we weren't the sharpest on the planet, it's amazing we all made it to adulthood! LOL

Reminds me of the 6mm's, the bob, 264 (6.5's were cool many years ago) - thanks for reminding me since i have many old rounds might need to be on the lookout for a good ole winny in a ruger 1 with a red pad on it!

Oh yes - as a brother in arms I highly encourage you to get another rifle and 270 winchester is a fine choice!

The 270Win has been the red-headed step child of the hunting world for a long time for every reason anyone could dream up. Too fast, too light, too small, no bullet selection, not a 30-06, not a 7 mag, bad brass selection, too much case stretch, and on and on. The fact is, it is about as close to perfect as you can get for most hunters for most critters with the bullets that have been coming available for the last 30 years. From 10 to 600 yards the 270 will get it done with a myriad of different bullets from a 10 twist. It is easy on the shoulder for the performance it provides, it has a good selection of powders to work with, tons of brass options in all price ranges and yes, plenty of application specific and do-all bullets to choose from. If you get one, you will find yourself reaching for it more often than you think.

It's a good thing that game animals and varmints can't read forums or we'd have an immediate and massive infestation of critters previously killed with a 270 pop back to life when they learn the 270 doesn't work.

Long live the king. That's how I feel about the .270 haha. It just works. Far more interesting to me than the .30-06 and just as emphatic a killer. If the 270 isn't enough gun for something neither is the .30-06…THERE I SAID IT When both are loaded
To potential the 270 even with its 10 twist STOMPS the 6.5 creedmoor, and by the time those high bc 6.5 pills catch up let alone exceed the power of the 270 it's at a range where neither cartridge is a good choice for big game. It's embarrassing for the 7 rem mag how close the boring old .270 gets to it from a shorter barrel. Anything the .25-06 does the 270 does better (THERE I SAID IT! - both are totally ridiculous for dedicated varmint or predator rounds and in my mind the .25-06 is forever the .25-almost Almost as in close to the .257 wby but not there yet haha. I know the same Is true about the 270 win and 270 wby but for some reason I don't care and that's mine to confess, I'm irrational!

I'm biased. It was my first rifle that was truly mine. And it performs so darn good. I often say it's a cartridge that doesn't know it's not a magnum.

I love my 270's, have three 700's and one Ruger 77 SS Mark II Skeleton stock.

For those that may have a shot out 270, looking for an EASY upgrade, the Std 280 Remington is the EASY button.

I will point this out, the 280 Remington IS a better mouse trap in that the CUP pressure it runs is less than the 270 bore, which allows some incredible velocity. The 280 Rem with the 160-168g bullets with IMR 7828, fed 210 will be all over 2900-2930 fps with EXTREME accuracy with bullets of very high BC on 24" barrels. With the 180g ELD-M, you are at 2700 fps with a BC of .798. This is no Joke!

Reloading manuals DUMB DOWN the 280 Remington due to the pumps and semi autos on the market. IN the Nosler manual #4, you will find some interesting "Most Accurate" loads for the 280 that is spot on. If you have never shot a bullet with a BC of .798, some things you just have to see for yourself, lack of wind drift/Drop, hits steel plates like a mack truck.

Some would consider the Rem 280 a wild cat it is so rarely mentioned, but it is one of the most prudent decisions in a cartridge choice you could make when your 270 barrel needs replacing.

But I do agree about the cartridge.

I'm a .270 and 30 cal guy so the 7mms are a bit redundant for me BUT even Jack O'Connor himself is purported to have reluctantly admitted that the 280 rem was a superior cartridge to his baby, the .270

This converts to 50,000 CUP for the .280 versus 52,000 CUP for the .270. These figures represent the Maximum Average Pressure (MAP), meaning the recommended maximum pressure level for loading commercial ammunition.

The pressures are quite close with slight edge to .270 Win. There are more and more high BC options for .270 if throated properly with sufficient max magazine COAL. The 156HH [email protected] @3200 fps has proven to be deadly. Berger 170EOL at G7 0.339 at 3100fps out of my .270 build is no slouch for down range performance. Velocity with better than average BC gets you the down range performance as well.

There is no doubt in my mind the .280AI is great cartridge but for me I don't need to add another layer of components. If I did not have a lifetime of investment in the .270, I'd have a .280AI!
