It was first light and I was upland bird hunting for Pheasant with my dog. Started working a bend in creek that had some medium sized willows mixed with tall grass and tule. Suddenly my pointer stops hunting and is just staring at me looking befuddled so I walk up to see if there is a porcupine or something in the area. I took a few steps past my dog into a willow patch and willows start snapping and ground was trembling when something the size of a horse brushed the muzzle of my shotgun. After some shock and befuddlement myself I realized we'd jumped three mature bull elk off their beds and I was in the escape route. The group included a huge 6X6 and two smaller 5X5's. I was grateful to make it back to my truck in one piece that day and now when my dog gets that look I proceed with more caution.
