What’s up with Hornady’s reloading podcast?

I've gone full circle lately. Good barrels shoot. Bad barrels don't.

I feed the barrels the most consistent loads that are possible to make. But past that meh, if a half grain of powder or a hundredth of seating depth would cause problems it's time to move on.

The real wackery here is guys thinking a +/-0.1gn precision scale can measure to the 0.01gn because of false precision on the read out. I'm sure I'll get at least one guy saying how consistent their Chargemaster is, but if that consistency is less than what the manual says the actual precision tolerance is.... well. There's lying, then there's lying to yourself. The second is much, much worse.

It's 100% correct. And completely in line with the results of the testing outdoor life published this week of their own independent test. It's also super easy to prove on your own, redo a ladder test 5 times and see if you find the same "node" even twice.
Its almost like people think factory match ammo uses unicorn dust and only option to find a hand load is finding a "node". The majority of people who were taught to do load development wont be able to be convinced. Its similar to guys using barrel tuners who believe in harmonics. They cant explain how match ammo shoots so well in so many different rifles and most certainly cant understand why there is a "node" close to max case capacity

I suppose when you get new tires for your vehicle you don't get them balanced because there is no such thing as harmonics. 🤣
I really didn't want to get drawn back in,...so off I go

So, I just started load development for my 25 Creedmoor. Barrel already has 200 rounds through it. Found a decent load with 121 Hammers to get me through this passed hunting season. I then bought some 115 Tipped Hammers to try out. I loaded a 10 shot ladder from 36gr - 40.5gr of H4350. Here is the 10 shot group.View attachment 561673

I figured if 10 shots grouped like that over 4.5 grains, I could pick any charge weight and it would probably group pretty good. So I picked 40.2gr to get the most velo without hitting pressure. As 40.5 is pretty close. Here were the results a couple of days later. View attachment 561676View attachment 561677
Then I loaded 5 more and shot this group a few days later.View attachment 561678View attachment 561679I deleted one shot due to an error I made during loading. I accidentally spilled some powder out of one round after I put up everything. That round shot 2966fps and it still grouped with the others. I never messed with seating depth. I stayed at 20 off the lands. Im just just 20 total rounds in for this load. Since this rifle is for hunting, I was happy with the results and stopped there. This was at 100yds as I don't have access to shoot further. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share my experience.
I don't know…I feel like that could be tuned yet😂😂😂
If you have to shoot at an animal twice I wouldn't aim at the same spot that's all I'm saying. Good shooting!

Yeah. and we don't nee to tune are vehicle engines, or even balance out the air pressure in them new tires, hell we don't even need a remote we can just watch whats on tv when we turn it on, we can lift what ever weight happens to be on the barbells at the gym, heck using the hornadys solution solves all kinds of issues. Just settle, things don't get better "it dispersion" ;)

That's funny. But seriously, how much am I leaving on the table by not "tuning" the load? Will it be a noticeable difference or not? I think it won't be worth it. I probably wouldn't be able to shoot well enough to see a difference. This is a hunting rifle not a benchrest or f-class build.

Have seen a 20-30 shot per tuner setting test? I've seen only one, and it didn't hold water. I'd love to see it done by a few other people. 2-3 shot tuner groups aren't statistically sound.

To have a statistically sound number, you'd have to take about 300 shots per "change" whether it's load or seating or whatever. You will burn out of barrel life before you reach your goal.
Do what works for you!

Horandys guys say 30 is a reasonable number, and I've heard others repeat that number. Either way I haven't seen any pro-tuner guys shoot anywhere near that to prove they work.

Litz dedicated an entire chapter to it in Vol III of his series. Said results were inconclusive.
Exactly. Reloadingallday posted some 21 shot groups, and it was also inconclusive.

I'll tell you even if you start doing 10 round groups the lines of what is "better" really start to blur.

I recall it was more along the lines of the tuner had no effect on group size

So are we taking someone's word or using statistics with the rules? Ignore what is convinient. Oh wait, that's way I don't use statistics to begin with!

Haha the internet world famous "flyer" or I pulled this shot. I will say sometimes it's easier to rule out loads right away. If it's 1 1/2 it's not getting better.
