Well that didn’t go how I planned it!

Here is the infamous buck that I killed following year from same stand that the Encore fell from preceding year. I killed him with a 500S&W in Encore that gotta say is not real pleasant to shoot in a 7.5 lb rifle. But it was great for close work in a swamp like this. Heck on ground you need a bayonet! Even in tree the shots were so limited that I don't think I had a shot past 25-30 yards! I actually did pretty much same approach. In stand hour + before first light and I shot him about an hour after daybreak. Cruising for love back there in swamp. I heard his rack hitting alders as he was walking so I knew it was him! It was a very nasty pull through that stuff too! Yes, I shot him deliberately through shoulder to prevent him from going anywhere! Its public land so you want them DRT.View attachment 347717
How many eyeguards does that buck have?

Took my BIL out on archery hunt. I had 7-8 bulls in this hidden basin, hard to get to. But you could drive way up high and cut threw this sadlle and drop in on them.We are out several hrs before daylight.Hiking sidhilling alders, its all good.As we approach daylight I look and confused, theres the truck 200 yrds away. I had walked threw saddle and around top of mountain ,instead of side hilling in where the elk were.OPPS! Anyone want go elk hunting?

I am down, you get us lost and I'll get buck fever if we do see anything lmao 😂

In I think 1975 my buddy and I went on our first and only guided hunt in ,I want to say the greys river range, with Larry Jenkins ,we were 17 or so years old ,we had a blast , we hunted off horses and we laughed the whole trip, and both killed Bucks.
On the drive home we pulled off the hwy and slept under an overpass for a while, somewhere in Nevada, we woke up and took off .
Two hours later my buddy goes , hey didn't we eat breakfast
At that restaurant about two hours ago?
Yep we got on the hwy after some sleep and went the wrong way, for two hrs 👍

Wrong on the shot part !
Oh, you mean the part about me setting off the alarm in my truck at 0 dark thirty, or taking the wrong turn more than once, or.....HaHa Still had a great time, Don!

I did too ! No, about my shooting skills... Shhhh...
I should of had my dog (Whiskey) sleep with you "inside" your truck. Lol ! He loves you. 🦮
Well, Whiskey needs to up his standards, and, we each got an antelope. So......

Yikes, that 500 has to have some hefty snort to it! Cool buck, too!

This happened to me just a few minutes ago, actually. I looked out my front window and could see a large 'red-bodied' coyote messing around @ 230 yards (ranged afterwards) away. I ran to the safe, grabbed my .243, a couple hand loads and my squeeze-bag and sneaked outside for a shot. I saw him go down a small hill which gave me time to quickly set up. I had just closed the bolt when I saw him reappear and I let out a 'bark' and stopped him. I held high on his neck/shoulder junction (to account for my 'zero') and touched the 2oz trigger….shot felt good…and I watched the coyote quickly trot away and I'm pretty sure I heard him laughing at me every step of his egress out of the area. I was puzzled….until I looked at my scope and saw that I had neglected to take the scope back to it's 'zero' from a previous outing. I shot over him and was never even in the ballgame!!!🤣😂

I was out hunting antelope with my son and had loaned him one of my rifles. He spotted a herd not long after setting up camp and we made a great stalk to within 200 yards. We got on our sticks without being detected and I waited longer than usual for him to shoot. Finally, he shot at "chip shot" range and didn't cut a hair. I look over to see him franticily cranking on the eyepiece, he looks over at me and mouthed the words "I can't see through this scope". Well, the really nice buck we were after was getting ready to head to the next county so I dumped him. I really felt bad about shooting "his" buck but I felt even worse for not even telling him about what the parallax knob is and how it worked. Can't remember where it was cranked to but it was all messed up! My bad all the way around! ( He did get his buck the next day with his own rifle which was actually still dead on after checking his zero. He hadn't checked it before the hunt. Lessons learned by both of us!)

😆 Grey's River . Region G. that's awesome. I hunted it in 1988 as a non resident. I also killed my first buck in Ca. 1975.

My first elk hunt. I missed a broad side shot at 150 yards. I had bull fever so bad I think I shook my boots off and I don't know if more shots would have been better. My buddy shot 9 times, we did count at least 4 entrance wounds. At one point he had to dump his pack to dig out more ammo. And we had to DLP a grizzly bear.

My lessons learned were: I still can't shoot freehand, buy a bigger pistol, take more than 1 magazines worth of pistol ammo on a week long hunt, and always make sure I can out run a least 1 person in the group.

I rarely can outrun anyone so I will have to rely on extra pistol ammo lol.
