Wondering if anybody has one of these and what their thoughts were? I have a couple VX5HD 3-15x56 scopes and absolutely love them. Been debating between a VX6HD 3-18x50 or this 4-20x52. I need new rings anyway, so buying the 34mm isn't that big of a deal to me. I don't really need illumination, but having it never hurts. It will be going on a CA BA tactical in 6.5 prc. Want a leupold because I've decided weight is a factor.

Also, they offer the 4-20x52 with a regular ZL2 low profile turret and a ZL3 target turret. Am looking at the ZL3 target turret model - anybody have any experience with those?

Curious as well. I'm within a day of buying a new scope and its between this one, your other choice mentioned, or a mark 5hd 3.6-18.
I have also been looking at the Mark 5 - I keep trying to love FFP scopes for hunting, just had my third failed attempt:). I buy them, mount them, hunt with them, curse them, sell them - then repeat. Its a vicious cycle for me! Lol

I bought my first ffp scope mark 5 hd 5-25 last year and love it! that being said I have it on a rifle I dont ever plan to hunt up close with or in dark timber since its non illuminated. I really like the turrets on the mark series vs the vx. Glass and coatings are the same on the 5 and 6hd along with the mark 5 according to an email from leupold when asked. Ive sold off almost all of my nf and have been replacing with the leupolds.

Do you just curse them for not being able to see the reticle in dark settings on low power? You can PM me if you want so as to not muddy the thread to much.

I agree with your thoughts on ffp completely! I have a Burris XTR II that I absolutely hate. That reticle is way too busy for me. I really need to get that sold!

Not a lot of input in this thread to muddy up:). Yes - I feel like low power is pretty much useless against a dark back ground. Illumination helps, but having to turn it on and off is a PITA. I am an idaho boy, its easy to go from wide open sage brush to sneaking through the pines etc. it also seems like a lot of FFP scopes come with these busy christmas tree reticles - I always dial, so a simple, clean reticle is all I need.

I have a couple of the VX-5 3x15's & also love them. With the service I get from Leupold, I will not even consider other scopes.

The illumination system on the vx series does seem like a pain to turn on and off. If I understand correct you have to hold the button for quite a long time for on or off. As you said varying conditions make it hard to keep it on all the time as illuminated reticle wash out more in the light. The mark 4 style illumination is very appealing... all except the price spike!
I'm trying to come up with the extra $ for the difference.

I have 4 vx5 and have had the vx6. They are amazing. Very clear with positive clicks and they track perfectly. I went with the zl3 because I wanted the tmoa retical. I don't care for the illumination, turning on the electronic level is a pain and not very practical in a hunting situation. I will be getting another vx5

Can't say about that one but I have 4 of the 3x18x50 vx-6 (not hd) and I really like them

Illumination turns on with a simple button push
Takes 3-5 secs to turn it off.
On the vx6hd line the self leveling reticle takes 10-12 seconds to turn on, but is only used for leveling the optic during mounting.

I dont know your budget but the illuminated mark 5 would be my choice. I like being able to hold the wind on any power.
Now I'm rethinking which I will order. I was in the process of putting payment info in when i got distracted and hopped over here and read this thread which pulled me in.
I guess I'm talking through my own problems haha
I really do prefer the turret on the mark 5 over the vx series.
The reason I hold back on the vx5 you want is the only reticle offered is the tmoa which also has very small subtensions and I think will also wash out in dark timber on dark animals.
