Well isn't this just so reassuring from today.

Holy !! Another object was just sighted over Canada! Are these appearing out a portal? Or our detection capability P poor? Scary we cannot detect these until "maybe too late"? Launch 1,000 with whatever payload, low tech poof!

They are preparing us for the presser when they say we shot down a vehicle from outside our solar system.

Thermal imaging is not good for cold objects at high altitude. Then, radar doesn't reflect back very well on the balloon surfaces, just a small payload that might bounce back a weak signal. So, China is exploiting that.
NORAD is scrambling for an answer, as they were primarily looking for bombers and warheads generating heat.
Spy satellites should be able to optically pick these up (weather permitting), but no one is talking in the US government.

I thought Dopler Radar can detect but I bet not used in military other than weather.

They do have it on most aircraft, used to detect wind shear and other things safety related in commercial aviation. No idea if thin parachute type material would bounce back with Dopler.

i would not be surprised if this administration had weather balloons launched to be able to look smart n tuff by shooting em down

It is a bit criminal that China's over there Scotch'N together yard sale/ flea market and helium into any kind of structure that's just about, barely airworthy and we're left footing the bills for the latest Raytheon, Lockheed,General Dynamic, Northrup to whittle it back into kindling. Probably on the order of a couple million bucks per engagement. The US ought to start sending the bill back to china. Any working taxpayer guy should be able to go to like Harbor Freight or the walmarts and pickup a free toaster or say a floor jack and the store can just deduct that from their invoice of the last Seapak that arrived from the made in china tool gang. Maybe then they'll stop sending over airborne BS.
