The reason it went that direction was the video posted was about seating depth.I'm surprised this thread got off on a tangent about bullet seating depths and engaging the lands. That is NOT why I remove the ejector during reloading. My sole purpose is for setting up the sizing die as mentioned. When the bolt just drops on its own on a sized case, I know that I have bumped the shoulder back far enough. The bolt needs its firing control system and the ejector removed to do this. If the bolt does not drop on its own weight, the case is not sized enough.
I do agree a stripped bolt will help you find the exact shoulder bump but for most rifles I just go .002" back from FF brass to allow some room for error.
For my ELR rifle which is always shot in a very controlled environment I did like you say and progressively pushed it back little by little until the bolt closed with very slight resistance, I do find this reduced my ES/SD.
