160-168 at 3000 is real world in the AI, and 2900 in the std 280. If there is a down side to either the std 280 and AI, I have not found it.

I have a new unfired stainless 24" 9 twist #4 Wilson barrel chambered in 284 Win threaded for a Tikka action.
I had it cut and chambered as a Tikka prefit.
It took 8 or 9 months to get and ended up buying a lightly used Shilen barrel already cut from someone here on LRH and spun it on and shoots fine.
Now this one finally shows up last month and I don't need it anymore.

It's not a 280AI but pretty much all of what a 280 Rem is and works fabulous in a Tikka action without the COAL concerns.

280AI is a great caliber!
The factory ammo will fit fine as will handloads with attention to COAL.

Nice! I have a mcgowen on a sako 7 mag and it shoots great. Just built a savage 280ai. I'm liking this caliber.

Definitely will be satisfied with your decision! Some very helpful insight on this forum when you're ready to start developing a load for your .280AI. Great cartridge.

If you need another option, you can shoot a 131 Hammer Hunter in 131 grain at 3300 fps (load workup here). I feel comfortable with it out to 900 yards. I don't have the COAL handy but will if you need it.

Don't worry about the factory mags, get a Mountain Tactical one and it will solve your problem.

A week later and someone is selling a Lilja Tikka prefit in 280AI and Tikka factory fluted 7 Mag for $215!
That would have been a cheap step into 280AI!
