Thread Hi-Jacking: Personal Assaults Becoming Norm?

Even as we talk about it here, the personal attacks contiue thinly disguised. I treated people with respect, even when they did not deserve it. For years I fought the temptation of the ignore list, but finally gave in a couple of weeks ago. I am up to three now, but I am sure it will grow. My philosophy is, if I don't see it, I won't be tempted to respond and get in the dirt, which I unfortunately did seconds ago, but that is the last time.
i was watching that tread, accusing people of being drug addicts is uncalled for no matter if you agree or not but that is the norm anymore.
That thread is a prime example I noted #59.

Oh my, orkan would be like........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................a..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................wait for it....................................................................................................................................................................................................king
As stated in OPs title. A specific member singled out and be-little'd to serve what purpose? this does not make LRH better or advance the discussion. Or maybe it does.

Well, the thread itself seemed to be about airing grievances. Whether I am out of bounds, I may be. Fact, certain members seem to need moderator assistance so they can function in a semi perfect environment. Others roll the dice.
If you don't like something, scroll on by, people that are in the mix, want to be there.
Maybe we all need to resign the forum agreement one more time, then again are rules the same for each?

I believe Muddy was spot on in his assessment. Some of the others have added great points as well. I have benefitted greatly from the knowledge and experiences of others on this forum. Nothing is perfect in social media world, but compared to other forums I have visited and joined, LRH is head and shoulders above them. We lost some respected members recently. I hope this trend does not continue.

Alinsky tactics is pretty much the norm it seems these days. If you cannot win a debate with data or information the personal attacks come flying out. Back to my puppy, kitten, and bison photos.

In our society it's now the norm, if you can't win an argument, attack with verbal insults. Much like the left does, doesn't know how to agree to disagree. There is no respect for other people's point of view.

In here where we all share the love for the same sport, we should be united and not argue and insult with each other about stupid things like my Berger is better, no my Barnes is.

Some other threads like ethics also go bad quick.

I remember two years ago or so Len did a cleansing, we lost a few good members here that were very knowledgeable, but didn't know how to let it go, or in some cases respect other's point of view.

no worries, I was just demonstrating how quickly a thread can get derailed by off topic responses, in some cases completely off the subject matter , for example ... guy asks for advice on selecting a 30 cal magnum cartridge for hunting big game .... then gets a bunch of guys with a ton of bs responses recommending some other caliber cartridges nowhere near a 30 cal mag or way beyond .... can be an eyerolling time, wading through some of the threads

What are you talking about, that never happens here. 🤪

Muddy, I appreciate your posts and your good humor a great deal.

Consider that perhaps this emotional and tribal behavior is actually a symptom of a greater problem, not just within LRH, but within the digital world.

The way I see it, it's almost like some kind of mind virus is wiping out critical thinking skills everywhere

It might be too much to ask all users to educate themselves on how to spot Logical Fallacies, but it does seem to work for a couple of smaller discussion forums I participate in.

What do you think?
I don't agree with that Darwin quote.

I think on social media, people get too sensitive. I will admit I am a smart a?$ sometimes

I still like to read and process what others say. Anymore, too many people draw a hard line. I am not saying it's here, I think we mostly have reasonable people on LRH. But the hard line stance goes against the idea of democracy, religion, and other guiding things in our society. At least try to listen before just saying I am right, you are wrong.

There will always be winers,a-holes,ppl stating their opinions that have no clue, ppl that go off topic, ppl that trash others classified threads, and ppl that attack other members. That will never change. This forum is a great place to learn, discuss, collaborate, and has advanced the sport without a doubt. I'm sure Len and the admins get a thousand emails a day from members complaining about something. The classifieds is no doubt their biggest headache and they could easily get rid of it. I'm glad they don't, but know before you buy something your taking a risk If you don't know that person. When you get burned let the forum know which member did it and drop it. Don't start a thread and wine about it for 20 pages. Like this forum Nothing great comes without adversity. I would rather have this forum and deal with the bad then not have it all. Sometimes ppl act like Len can just wave his magic wand and everything will be Sunshine & Rainbows forever. I'm not calling out the op or other members by any means. Nothing I've stated is right or wrong, it's just my opinion.

Nothing I've stated is right or wrong, it's just my opinion.

And unfortunately many don't know how to respect an opinion different than their own.

The fact that we need an ignore button is the issue, we shouldn't. Now have I used it? Yes I have, and unfortunately will continue to do so.

We complain about the left and the liberals, and then we become them. 🤔

Live and let live.

I have read the posts. It just seems to me there is a festering anger that is waiting to be released at the slightest disagreement. And no I am not thin skinned. I worked for 40+ years in manufacturing and at times had to tell a SrVP or Division President they cannot do what they want to do. You better have teflon skin to survive. I have had my share of upper management trying to remove every skin cell in retribution.

If I feel I have strong documentation for my position, I do not need to convince anyone. If I am satisfied with my premises, I will listen for possible improvement but I still do not need to convince anyone. I do not need anyone's validation whereas it seems that is where the "validation" battles are fought.

My whole point is disagreement is healthy, snarling personal attacks are not. The term "keyboard warrior" is more true now than ever before. Social media has removed the need for anyone to be civil or accountable for their behavior. Social media allows anyone to hide behind their firewalls and lob whatever over them without thought or recourse. This thread isn't about suck it up, over sensitive, put your big boy pants on. If you do, ok, point proven. Its simple philosophy for me, when I speak to someone, I expect civility. Snide, inane, innuendos, gets absolutely nothing except recognition of ones character or lack thereof.

As I get older, (than dirt), the lack of civility is wearing on me more and more. I have much less tolerance for personal attacks. The ignore button does nothing for anyone.

Many of you are probably wondering if I have dementia bringing this up on LRH. Maybe so.

Having been a participant on this forum(a well as a few others in particular areas of interest) for well over a decade. the total number of participants has universally increased quite radically with most all of them. While good in some aspects, it also increases the frequency of nuts, trolls, combatants, etc. I think I have managed to get lots of value(and maybe provide some) from this forum by being more selective of the threads I choose to participate in, and ignoring the unproductive ones. Overall, lots of good and knowledgeable people on this forum, just have to weed out the duds. They usually go away when ignored.

Greyfox it's off topic but I must admit I have enjoyed your input on many topics. I like you have been around here a long time just don't post much. Still contemplating a 6.5-284 but keep bouncing between it and 6.5 Swede Ackley.

We are often encouraged to buy certain products and make decisions as a result of being fed selected info that supports what we want to believe. This can promote uncivil behavior. Opinions, supported by facts contrary to this fed info, cause personal disparagement instead of intelligent responses. An intelligent, calm & healthy back & forth discussion should "shake down" important gun related facts in LRH forum.

My approach is to gather facts supporting my position before making a suggestion or response.

I am not conflict avoidant as my former IT background incuded developing computer systems & deleted file recovery that would show wrongful personnel practices. Upper managment used the results of my efforts to force early retirement on offenders. In addition to receiving the bad wishes of the offenders, I usually had to provide complete & exact documentation of my work. This, naturally, has carried over into my thinking regarding technical aspects like guns & shooting on LRH.

A real nice, detailed & pleasant discussion supported by facts is real good and much preferred. When I was paid to jam & search out stuff, my attitude was to be like tide water rising. Personal attacks are analyzed for indications of what to look for. No "ignore button" for me.

My next activity is to watch the humming birds feeding on red "Perky Pet" mixed with water while sipping some George Dickel on ice.

1 hour later -

I saw a tiny hummer like the size of a big bug do a 270 around the feeder. It was mostly brown but had a yellow breast. He/she did not come back for a photo, 10X camera lens. Next stop bird ID book.
