Thoughts on 35 calibers

something else to consider

I'm 5'6" 150lbs

I shoot a 348win which puts a 220gr@2100fps which is THE MAXIMUM RECOIL I can stand, one has to draw the line somewhere to realize their chance of making GOOD hits

35 Whelen I believe runs higher pressure and more velocity

I'm rocking a 20" barrel and the Model 71 is quite heavy, substantially heavier than the 30-06 I carried for some time

Might I add, I THOUGHT I wanted a 35 whelen til I checked the facts and pondered it a while.

Not really, I found my old Win Model 71 very nice to carry and I loved the .348 Win cartridge. Cheers.

I love my 348 and wouldn't trade it for the world, did you ever chronograph to see what velocities you have = to recoil???

The 200gr shoots much tamer than the 220s for me. 200s enjoyable, 220s bearable but I wouldn't shoot a ton of them at once

Rifle fit, weight, stock shape, butt drop, and type of recoil pad have a much greater effect on felt recoil than does the shooter's size!

When all is right for the shooter……the big stuff can be down right pleasurable to shoot! memtb

If the numbers 98s1lightning gave are somewhat close, I extrapolated some load data to approximate his numbers. I came up with just under 20 ft/lbs recoil with the recoil impulse @ 3.23 lbs/sec.

If I'm anywhere close to correct…..the rifle simply doesn't fit him well. That said, you hate to modify a classic to reduce felt recoil! memtb

338-06 and 9.3x62 should be considered also. Both great rounds that will put a thump on things. Don't let the 3006 size case fool you though. With heavy bullets the 35 whelen and 9.3x62 will put out felt recoil like 338 win mag. So light rifles and these medium rounds can be a little punchy.

Rifle feels like its made for me, fits me to my liking. Proper fit I don't know.

Steel buttplate factory on these rifles, at least its shotgun style and flat though.

What I mean when I say tolerate recoil, I can't hold on to any more power if I up the powder charge the lever will unlock during recoil.

348win is a reloaders cartridge in my opinion

220@2100 may not seem impressive on paper but its got some punch; and obviously I don't need to hot rod it so much it causes a malfunction for me, so I cut off my powder charge where I can "hold onto the dang thing"

I've seen some good sized bears and moose where I hunt, the 348 gives me peice of mind in a carbine, a handy size rifle for the thick woods

Also if I ever bump into the buck of a lifetime I don't have to worry bout it running far if I connect

And nothing carries like a lever

I traded it off—a dumb mistake! I never choreographed the rifle. I just loaded it out of the book using Barnes Originals 250gr with H4895, and it killed everything I shot with it. I loaned it to my son-in-law, and he shot a very nice American Bison with it. Cheers

They must have big deer in Iowa. Way overkill for deer in my book unless you just like recoil and rainbow trajectory. A 358 of the right flavor and correct bullet will kill anything. But there are better calibers for everything.

Just kidding guys. Enjoy those 358s.
There are a few big-uns around, but they're not as big as the goofballs at the DNR in Des Moines must think they are.
My group is really enjoying the freedom to put a rifle bullet where we want it, instead of trying to put a slug in the general vicinity.
...9.3x62 should be considered also. ...
That's what I did to fit in with the new rules here. The rest of the group (not a rifle nut among them) is quite happy with their .350 Legends.

For your 350y deer, the "Legend" isn't really there with only 470fpe out there. 1000fpe @ 150y and 500fpe @ 330y.

This triggered another 35cal thought

I have to run 3 rear different sight adjustments, 1 for each bullet weight 200gr, 220gr, 250gr

I dislike the 250gr, it has worked for me hunting, BUT the trajectory sucks compared to the two lighter weights and the recoil is the worst

I stick with the 220s

Also my rifle recoils to the point that I have cannelure/crimp groove problems with the tube mag. I have to run a precise heavy crimp in a "deep groove" bullet. Or else I end up finding bullets getting pushed down into case, after a day in the field. I suppose it could be the tube mag spring is too stiff but I suspect when I find them pushed back its the remaining magazine balance of rounds after at least 1/5 rounds was fired and jarred them all with recoil.
