Thinning the herd.

Kids dont want the stuff. if it is not a new phone or computer no interest. When they do sale the old man's stuff they are just dumb enough to sale it at a garage sale.
Dont ask me how I know this. I stopped AT A 2ND Cousins wife's garage sale 6 months after he pssaed away, kept her from selling a Parker double barrel shot gun that her husband had and kids did not want. taking it out of case and getting ready to put a yellow sticker on it for $25.00........
I about went in my pants right there. 5 more minuites it would have been gone. Marty
You should have bought it.

I'm getting to the age (and medical problems) where I cannot get out to shoot much, much less do any hunting, dangit, and my three kids haven't been in touch for years, so I have no compelling reason to set any particular gun aside to give them after I'm gone. As for other family, they couldn't give a hoot about shooting or hunting so NONE of them will see enrichment by ANY means, be it willing them any firearm or personal assets of mine.
As a consequence, I'm looking at culling the herd, as it were, selling off a BUNCH of guns and using the money to just enjoy the rest of my life.
As for the rest of my family, SCROOM! LOL
I do have one great shooting rifle I'd like to leave to a good friend but only if he still hunts prairie dogs.
It is the huge assortment of reloading equipment and supplies I'll need to divest myself of, too. The sad thing about all that is folks want you to all but GIVE it to them or nearly pay THEM to take it off your hands without being in the least bit reasonable!!! How RUDE is that?!?
Signs of the times, I'm sad to say.
Guess I need to make a list and get going on doing something if I'm going to actually DO it, eh?!? LOL

What did you do to alienate the kids?

Luckily, I have a wife who understands my passion for shooting. Unfortunately, I have a pragmatic side that drives 99.99% of my decisions. It's not a matter of sentiment, those firearms are safe from the cull. It's the previous sale that moved all of the easy decisions. Now it's down to the rifles that didn't sell last round and the rifles that are simply occupying space in my safe because I was holding on to the dream.
Most of what i shoot is 6.5 and 30 cal.
Things like the venerable .270 and the .338 Federal etc are all in the chopping block.
Fortunately I have an understanding wife as well, but like you, I only shoot my 6.5 Creedmoor and my 300 WM with any regularity. I have been pondering thinning the herd as I am 72. I have a few family guns and some Kimber 22's and 22 Hornets that I probably would never sell. The model 70's and various others I probably would never miss.

Huh? Cut it up and made an abortion out of it?
Took a NIB, never fired, still in the wrapper rifle with some rarity value and threw away everything except the action. Had a local hack of a 'Professional' gunsmith cut the bolt face and barrel it for the then latest, greatest "inherently accurate" cartridge. Only he did it on the cheep so it was ugly and didn't shoot a good as it would have were it all original.

I sold 50 rifles and 6 shotguns and don't miss any of them. What I wanted to have was one of each cal, to hunt anything on the planet.
257 wby. mag 300 wby.mag 30 nosler 338 lapua 460 wby mag. I believe that covers anything i want to hunt smallest to the largest and meanest. After testing the 30 nosler may replace the 300 wby. mag. The other thing was i had no one i wanted to leave them to. I put the money back in my bank account.
I'm available for adoption.....just sayin

A few years ago I sold off a shotgun that never fit me right. I regret it only in that it was a nice shotgun and I'll occasionally miss the quality of it. The flip side is that it beat the living hell out of me. I replaced it with a lighter semi auto 20 gauge that fits me like a glove and I can shoot all day.

Last year I sold off two bolt guns that never met my expectations for them and a rifle I used to shoot high power with. I had fallen out of the high power game so it was collecting dust. I put the money from those three towards a bolt gun (ended up being two after I threw some money in) that certainly has met my expectations. Couldn't be happier with them. Same as above, I only miss the bolt guns when I think about the quality they had. I justed lived the control round feed M70 action, but the barrel length, stock, accuracy, etc never quite did it for me. The high power match rifle was a tool to play a game. I lost interest in the game so the tool list it's purpose.

But the sentimental or historical stuff I had would be worth more to me than what it's worth to anyone else, so that stays. The tools come and go as their uses come and go.

Im working hard at getting all my grandkids into hunting. 4 of them do, 2 are too young yet. I have been gifting some rifles to the first one that takes a big game animal with each. But, the rifles, worth much in time and effort by me, gets passed on to grandkids that really showed interest and keeping the tradition alive. So far the 4 have done that.
Other rifles just take up space, and only have my memories of past hunts. Not the most accurate, but they're decent hunting rifles. It's something that needs to go to them somewhere, someday. My biggest fear is they lose them somehow and not hang on to them. After I'm gone, it doesn't matter anymore. Hopefully, 6 grandkids have great memories and a rifle that went with them.

So the time has come. After last year, selling 21 rifles, I have made the decision to sell off most of the rest.
As of right now, I am looking at selling another dozen or so. That includes glass and accessories.
I am moving toward less collecting and more of what actually works for me, with the odd few "because I want them," rifles.
Has anyone else done this and did you immediately have regret?
What did you sell/keep?
I'm focusing on a happy balance between hunting and precision/target rifles.
Let me know what your thoughts and experiences are.

And I know, I know... never sell, but here we are.
Any 25-06 or something along these lines for sell?
