Hey folks!
Just wanted to tell a story.
My last kill was in the fall of 2018.
Since then, hunting chances have been very slim!
The "why" of not being able to hunt would make a grown man cry and I won't bore you....BUT....
The day before season opened, the wife and me spot a buck that is unbelievable! Tall, narrow and extremely white. Our glimpse is fleeting, but there is no doubt, he's a "shooter"!
He just across the road from my neighbors wheat field. When we get home, I call him and tell him about the deer.
That Saturday, I get a call from my neighbor!
"I saw him!"
It was still too dark to safely shoot and the buck slipped into a thicket. The buck reappeared in a wheat field about 200 yards away!
When the neighbor went to collect his buck, it wasn't "THE" buck, but still a respectable buck.
Next to last day of "Deer Gun", Chet (the neighbor!) calls me!
"Wanna go hunting?"
"ABSOLUTELY!", I replied!
By the time does quit filing into the wheat field, there are probably twenty deer out there!
I spot antlers across the fence in some brush. It's a pretty nice buck, but nothing really outstanding.
Another rack appears in the brush! OH, boy! THAT'S a hoss!
Chet sees the first buck jump the fence and says, "That's a nice buck."
"There's a bigger one behind him!"
When the bigger buck crosses the fence I hear Chet gasp! "HE'S HUGE!"
At 200 yards, my little 8× binoculars don't reveal much detail.
He appears relatively "typical", I can only guess, probably 10+ points.
His G2's appear to be about 10"! His rack is wider than his body!
Probably not "B&C", but one any hunter would be happy to tag!
We get a gun up, but Chet's replacement heifers block any shot.
The heifers eventually move off. We finally relocate the buck, but he's moved behind some trees.
The buck grazes out into the open, but Chet's heifers come back to ogle us and drool!
The heifers move, the buck is behind weeds but slowly feeds out.....and the heifers return!
The does in the field flag and leave the field. Chet spots a coyote crossing the wheat field.
The buck leads the troup of does back into the brush across the fence!
Oh well!
But it was good to see a really good buck!
Bonus Antlerless season and Chet calls again!
"Yes! I'll be right there!"
Does file out of the brush into the wheat. Probably 20 or so.
Soon, the does begin to flag and flee the field!
Another coyote!
"They'll be back." Chet says as he relaxes in his chair.
Probably 30 minutes later, a spike and a fork horn come into the wheat field. We see other deer working through the brush to the fence.
The next 5 deer that jump tge fence are all bucks!
One of them is HUGE! ....and this one has a drop tine! So it's not the same buck we saw the other day!
Does come into the field, but we're enjoying the "Drop Tine", so we don't shoot.
The sun sets with a gorgeous gold and blue smear across the western sky.
Two bucks, a spike and a 6, are crossing the pasture, not 40 yards away.
I watch them until they jump the fence into the upper wheat field.
I go back to a third buck crossing the pasture when Chet whispers, "What just jumped the fence?"
I go back to the sunset.
The perfect silhouette of a massive buck is black against the golden sunset!
The buck comes towards us, but disappears into the fading light!
WOW! Two massive bucks in one day!
FOUR big bucks in one season!
No, I never fired a shot, but what a season!
