Split case stuck in 223 sizing die

if this works in a chamber I don't know why it wouldn't work in a die. it is tapered you would only need to move it .001-.002 before it would fall out.

Exactly what I was gonna suggest

I tried a cleaning brush with no luck other than to crush the bristles. I did figure out to thread from the bottom up in the press, that part works great.

I am going to put some penetrating oil on it and warm it in the oven and try that using a brush.

If that doesn't work I will put it in the freezer and try that with a brush.

If that doesn't work I am going to throw it as far as my old worn out arm will allow and then buy a new one!!!

i could use another .223 die..let me know if you throw it and I'll watch the skies
I see you are in SW GA, if I am lucky and throw it just right, it might wind up in the SW part of my yard!!!! But you can watch for it at your leisure!!! LOL

At this point, I am thinking I should just buy another set of dies. I am sure it is just me, but I have broken more decapping pins than I care to remember on 223 and cannot remember breaking one on any other caliber. Likely I have stuck more cases in a 223 die than any other as well, despite lubing the cases EXACTLY as I would any other.

Reminds me of loading .410 shotgun shells, Pain In The.......

Problem is, I love to shoot my 223 rifles, especially the REM 700 SF Varmint bolt gun. Got home from SD shooting prairie dogs on Monday. Longest this year with that 223 was 360 yds. Nothing to contact the Guiness Book people about, but I do enjoy making a long shot.

If you're sticking that many cases then obviously you're lacking slickm'...
I use Hornady one shot.....learned long ago to shake the heck out of the can...some people let it 'dry' on the brass...I start decanting and resizing right away...sure crapola over the hands..but they dont stick....just make sure to get some down the necks also.....
I spray three directions on a full loaded plastic block(with the brass on it)....and slightly downward......

If you tried a bronze brush up in that brass and couldnt get it out...try a threaded lag bolt...seat it up inside there..then use a clawed hammer to attach to the head side and whack really hard....the slightest movement should free it......

I use the heavy duty universal decapping die and haven't broken a pin since. Adds a step. If you are going to reuse other people's empties something like a stuck case will eventually happen. In the end run you still are money ahead by a lot.

Find a hardened washer the size of the case. And use your press n punch to push it out.

This happened to me sort of. What I did was cut the exposed case head off carefully with a junior hacksaw avoiding the decap/expander ball.
You don't have to do that first operation. I then drove the decap/expander rod out of the die.
With a round cutter in a dremel remove as much of the thick metal from the embedded case until it's the thickness of the neck.
I used 1" long thin copper picture frame nails but brass is preferable.
Drive these up between the case and die, this collapses the case somewhat and the copper or brass nails won't damage the sides of the die.
Mine came out as I pulled the nails out but my fallback plan was a 6mm metric tap (it was a 223 rem round) to cut into the neck of the case and to thread a 6mm and draw the case out using a larger than case diameter socket as a bridge with a 6mm socket screw and washer.
Hope that is clear.

Remove stem out the bottom since the case head is gone.

Fill with cerrosafe, stick in freezer, tap or press it out drop the top.

I never did a die with a ruptured case but I have done a few hornet cases in a CZ 527 that I ran a cycle too far on the RP brass.

Be patient with the cerrosafe, let it cool well. If you try it while the inside is still too warm the driving rod can just press a hole through the still too malleable cerrosafe.

Pop it out just like a stuck case with the head.

There's instructions for one of the commercial kits here, you can DIY it just the same with a bolt, tap, and pile of washer. You'll need a different size tap though. I think I use a 3/8 for 223 cases but wouldn't swear to that.

Lucas oil makes a product called super creep. I've seen it advertised on power nation.. Penetrint / lubricant.

Get an Easy Out like you use to remove a broken bolt of the right size that it fits snugly in the case.
tap lightly so you do not cut through the brass case and twist out of the die. Soak in Kroil for a day or so before trying this. Has worked for me several times.
