special 22cal ar15 round for something different

I'm led to believe and 22nosler is just a hot 223rem?
I'm sort of in the same boat. Difference is bolt action vs. gas gun.

I already have the barrel. It's threaded, short chambered and crowned.

It's winter and it's cold in the shop. Very little doing and lots of "what if".

The barrel is a 9 twist. At the time it was considered very fast. In today's world, not so much so some of my what if's are meh.

BTW: I have a BHW .264 LBC (tighter chamber than Grendel but same case spec) barrel to go to a new home. Barrel, bolt and firing pin package. I can't tell you the gas tube length ATM, I will have to measure it full rifle or mid.

20 Practical is a fine AR cartridge if you want small and fast. Easy to form cases, fast, accurate and deadly on small critters. I built a 6ARC on the AR platform a while back and am very pleased with the performance and accuracy. I used an EABCO accuracy barrel and assembled everything else using all the accuracy mods as you should for any accurate AR.

What are the accuracy mods that we should use for any AR?

There is a thread on AR15.com and more on Snipers Hide that cover all the steps to building an accurate AR. Some are basic and some require specific tooling. Lapping and squaring the upper face where the barrel extension makes contact, bedding the extension with green loctite, lapping the lugs, etc. There are a number of things to pay attention to that will help you get the most accuracy out of an AR considering all the moving parts. Good luck on your build!

For an extra, I'd recommend a monolithic or as close to monolithic upper as you can find. I had one rifle that I built with a standard upper and the seekins sp3r hand guard that exhibited a .6 mil shift between bipod shooting and shooting off a barricade bag placed at the rear of the hand guard. When I changed out to a seekins imrt-3, that dropped to .2 mil shift.

17-556 KAK looks cool. Cheap enough barrels that if you get one that's "meh", you could just send it down the road and build something else.

Also, Berger just dropped a batch of their 25gr HPs… 🤔

I've read about to many bolts breaking on the 6 arc so it makes me nervous.
The JP Enterprise Enhanced bolt is usually considered THE bolt to use . I do hear and read that the Rexus Ultrabolt is the other top option. Use one of those and stay at gas gun load data.

You asked about accuracy mods. Make sure the reciever face is squared, they make a tool. If the barrel fits loosely in the reciever, use stainless steel shim stock to get a tighter fit, lots of videos on this on YouTube. Remove the wiggle between the upper and lower. Usually a high quality matched reciever set is tight. JP makes offset pins to tighten it up, some lowers have screw with a nylon tip behind the trigger guard that puts pressure on the upper. Use a good barrel, good muzzle device, trigger and buffer system.
