Hey all I'm looking for help choosing a good deer and elk bullet for my slow 7mm rm. it's a 21.5" 1-10 twist barrel.
Right now I'm looking at
150gr eldx
162gr eldx or m (thinking twist is too slow )
168gr Berger classic hunter (min impact velocity?)
Accubonds (min impact velocity for these?)

I can't find any info on the 160gr tmk to see if it would possibly work.

Given my stabilization limitations what bullet do you all have experience with?

I like 162's in my 7 mag. I've shot both Hornady interlock and the eldx with good results regarding accuracy and effectiveness on game. Velocity from 2950-3050 fps using H4831 in a 24" . Here's the ballistics on my eldx load.

To date, what's been shooting well in your gun?

I'd be looking at the 120 TTSX and or the 139 Horn sp (not the boat tail)

7mm 160 TMK have been unavailable for years. Unless you have a big stash in stock, cross them off your list.

The 165 TGK is available everywhere.

I've tried the factory ammo I had on hand and wasn't impressed in the accuracy it gave. This is a new to me rifle so starting more or less from scratch
162gr precision hunter
150gr tipped corelokt
159gr ballistic silver tip

168 Berger classic is the ticket. Been using this bullet with retumbo for many years in a TC venture 10twist. Kills like lightning. With your short barrel You may need a different powder, 6.5 staball might be a good try.

Not on your list but the 132gr Hammer HHT will be fully stable and run 3400 plus in your short barrel. Legit elk medicine to 600y plus.
I had that bullet to mid 3300s (based on drop) in my 280AI. Unfortunately wasn't able to get an animal, but the accuracy out to 400 was stellar. It gets my vote.

I'll give another vote for 168CH. Not the best for blood trails from pass through, but does a great job at making quick kills. I shot 160AB's for decades out of slow twist 7RM. I never had a bullet failure with this combo.

I'm actually kind of surprised to hear someone did a 10 twist in a Big 7, is it a factory rifle?

Yes it's a Colt light rifle, I should have had it rebarreled but budgets at the moment dictate shooting with factory tube.

For the folks shooting 168gr ch how difficult are they to load for regarding seating depth and what is the minimum impact veloctity for full upset? Seems like eldx can go all the way to 1800fps and still be effective.

I have a 7Rm 1-10 twist and using a twist calculator I found bullet length over 1.370" starts to become marginal. The cup core bullets I found in the mid weight range were the Berger 168 classics 168 SMK Speer 160 boat tail and Speer 175 grand slam. I have shot Nosler 160 accubonds with a marginal group of 1.5" at 100 yards. Witch the are 1.385" so that confirms what the twist calculator says. I'm at 1000' elevation if your high you might get away with a longer bullet.

Perfect that helps narrow things down. I'm at 3500' but hunt all the way up to 5000' or so.
