Short barreled 7mm info

I bought a 7PRC last fall, and 2800+ is no problem for mine out of a 22" barrel. I bought it for the very reason of suppressors. I haven't shot it in a while, and I'm still working on tuning, but I think it's going to work out just fine. I've been shooting 160-175 grain bullets and every load that I thought had promise was easy to bang steel out to 500 yards. I haven't even started changing seating depth, and I just bought some ADG brass as it worked great with my 28 Nosler, so I'm optimistic it's going to be deadly out to 6-800 yards.

Ever tried any heavier bullets?
I tried some Sierra hollow point game kings in 160gr but that's the heaviest I've gone, I think speed was just under 2900fps if I remember correctly . I had no problems with their length or anything but I preferred the speed and terminal performance of the hammers.

I built a 7 Sherman Short on a R700 Short Action with a 20" barrel. I was able to purchase brass and dies at the time when everyone was snatching up all the 7SAUM. I am currently pushing 175gr ABLR at 2700 out of a 20" barrel. Even in a 9lb rifle all loaded up with scope/suppressor/3rd Mag I can spot my own shots at 200yds.

The ABLR expand all the way down to 1300fps so I don't bother trying to hotrod them. It makes it easier to spot shots and the large cow elk I whacked this fall at 490yds is sitting in my freezer.

Currently building a 20" saum. I'm doing a medium action. 7/08 is sweet just not enough case capacity. The bigger mags get rowdy in short barrels. Supressor helps. The saum is the sweet spot.

The PRC I recently bought is tame with the Bannish 30, but it does have a 22" barrel, and Bergara's are a bit heavier than most, but it's the Sierra Wilderness left hand model, and it's a nice-looking rifle, especially for the price. I love customs, just didn't want to spend that much money right now.

I have mentioned it on other threads, the 175+ bullets only work better than the 160-168 bullets IF they are moving the same speed. I would reverse the method of determining your cartridge...
Pick a set of parameters: distance, minimum velocity and max amount of wind you want to deal with, (ex.: 3minutes at 10mph)
Pick a bullet or even a brad of bullets you want and plug them into a calculator at the environmentals you will be hunting in
Play with speed to reach your parameters, if the speed gets going faster than what you can comfortably do with a 20" barrel- then pick a different bullet and try it again.
once you find a reasonable velocity and bullet combo, the cartridge to do it will show its self.

All that said, its typically a 20" magnum and even some of the short mags have a hard time with powder capacity.

I'm in the same dilemma. I love my 24" 280AI, but I want an 18" tube pushing 175-195's with a suppressor. By my calculations, a 7 Sherman Mega can hit 2700fps with the 195 Bergers and 2900 with 175's. So that's the direction I'm leaning. OR, you could do the Federal Backcountry and watch everyone's heads explode with criticism. 😆

How are they reloading the Federal, or is that even a possibility with the steel case?
