Short barreled 28 Noslers?

To make a long story short, I built a 28nos with your standard 26" proof barrel. Love it! Shoots amazing. The places I go a long barrel gets caught on enough stuff as it is, which i can live with. But! I like running a suppressor and it turns a little aggravating with the added length.
So I'm thinking of pulling the barrel and going to a 22". I wouldn't be opposed to a 20" either.

That being said, how many guys out there are running shorter barrels on 28s and what kind of performance are you seeing?

Main reason I want to stay with the 28 is because I already have a pile of reloading components for it.

A couple things to think about. You are automatically going to be going slower, which you probably know. Also, you are not going to be burning all your powder, so having a huge case like that is being defeated by cutting your barrel so short.

You may also want to tighten your twist rate too to ensure full stabilization. Recommend nothing shorter than the 22...

Thanks for the input. I'm aware of the shortcomings of the shorter barrel. I'm more just curious if it can still remain useful.

..why ? It defeats the purpose of your choice of the fly by nighter in the first place. You might as well use the plain Jane ho-hum boring 7mm/08, you'd basically achieve the same velocity and what little actual difference wouldn't be missed in the hunting world..

Completely wrong. A 22" 28 Nosler will send a 180 faster than a 42" 7-08.

Yes it will be useful.

Mine is 24". A rechambered 338 WM Weatherby Mark V "big block" ;) Edit: forgot to include, the one I reference is a 338/28 Nosler. I haven't hunted with the 28 yet. It is also a 24" rechambered Mark V "big block".

I took 2 running elk with it. It was a running hunt, those were the rules. My choice of projectiles was influenced by that. I used 185 TTSX going fast. Both DRT but one was not "perfect" and required a follow up shot.

I believe a 22" with a suppressor would be VERY nice. It is well documented that you will lose 50fps with a 22 vs my 24, nothing. Depending on choice of projectile could be %100 burnt powder or not. ;) Not really an issue. Muzzle blast. Yeah, there is muzzle blast, so that suppressor is your friend. I don't really want to shoot mine until I get a can.

First i have heard of a mandated "running" hunt 😳

28 Nosler is ideal with a 26" bbl ballistically. Some folks would say longer.

Might lose a bit more than 50 but still with a MV of above 3000, no biggie.
