Shooting Steel

So I see a lot of replies here that guys are shooting steel with hunting rifles at 100 , 200 yards !! What is the point of that ? Isn't the whole point of shooting steel so that you can have a audible ring at longer distances and spot your hits ?
With most scopes bigger than 14 power I can see my groups at 200 yards on paper so why would anybody shoot at steel inside of that ?

Opinions, lol
If you are not shooting groups, I ask why not, making a 4" steel plate dance at 200 just equates to 1 dead, goat, deer, elk, etc... Same goes if you are advancing distances.
Plus it will hang in place for yrs w/o replacing it, unlike paper.

I'm a farmer as well and I use my old disks blade and they work great. The distance and velocity is the key. Anytime you are over the 3200 fps speed and you are under 200 to 300 yards you can see penetration but if you are 400+ they will hold up just fine. This target is set up at 835 yds and has been shot at with 300 win mag with no dents. I know a guy who has shot AR plate at 300 yards with a 85 grn 22 creed 3300 fps. that dimples the plate that a 300 win doesn't leave a mark on it.

AR500 Steel will hold up at further ranges (200+ yards/meters). However, I punched a clean hole in my AR500 plate at 115 yards with my 300 RUM pushing 190gr Berger Hunter VLD's. Have punched holes in previous AR500 plates at 225 yards with this same RUM with 220gr ELD-X. Sight in on paper at 100-200, then get your plates out past those ranges and let it fly.

Orange target was at 225 with 220 ELD-X
White target, directly above yellow circle…190gr Berger at 115 yards

I bought a Caldwell plate on Amazon for $34 free shipping.
Plan to use nothing larger than the 6.5 RPM or a 22-250.
Nothing shorter than 300 and cheap bullets.
Too hard to find powder for the big boys(the 6.5 is bad enough)
One lb of RL 25 on gun broker $150 with shipping!

Unless is was thin plate, I don't believe it was AR500 rated steel. It may have been advertised as such, but I have been shooting steel for a long time. I have hammered mine at 100 yards with my 338 Lapua, using 300 grain MatchKings at 2750 fps. All it did was knock the paint off. My steels are 7/16" thick.

At my range I have steel out to 1500 yards starting at 200 yards.. 8x8, 10x10, 12x12, 12x24, 24x36, and 36x36. I also have a 36x36 as a sighter target at 600 and a 48 x 48 for my 1000 yard sighter for load development . All are 3/8TH AR 500. I let a few shoot out there and some sneak in.

All are in PERFECT condition except one....600 yard sighter steel. Someone put a 5 shot group on it.....4 REALLY deep divots and one pass through. No one admits to it, and I can't figure for the life of me what combination did it. I HAMMER the thing with my EDGE and it barely scratches the paint!!

I have a few older 1/4 inch mild that I had out at 1500 years ago and there were LOTS of pass throughs and it is so bent that it almost looks like a giant bowl.

Steel is BIG fun!!!
