Shooting Rest to remove Human Error

Get one of the Caldwell Lead Sleds and you won't have to put up with the recoil while you're working on load developement. The DFT Lead Slead is a very good rest.

Here's a link to pictures of a machine rest used by a few of the high power rifle competitive shooters.

This one belongs to David Tubb and both he and his dad, George, used it extensively to test rifles for accuracy without human intervention. A Tubb 2000's the one pictured but rifles with wood stocks mount the same way. Fore end's clamped in the front jaws and the butt stock has escucheons for the cross bolts to clamp into. The top carriage weighs about 30 pounds and the base about the same.

Mid Tompkins has used his machine rest of the same design to shoot some 600 yard 10-shot groups back in the '70's that are smaller than current benchrest records. A friend of mine has one made from the same plans and he fired 57 shots from the same .308 Win. case all into a .57-shot group at 100 yards measuring .256 center to center (who says you can't reload the same case more than 5 or 6 times?).

Nothing is going to lock the rifle down where it doesn't move at all and no amount of precision in your loading is going to eliminate shooter errors.
Nothing? This one will.

Go to the following link and you'll see the details. Such machine rests have held Model 70 Winchester based riifles shooting full length sized ammo into smaller groups than benchrest records.

ronedog,

Do you know an accomplished shooter who has a known accurate rifle? If not, you might try a local gun range. At this point you do not know if your problem is your rifle, optics, ammo, or shooter error.

If you were to have an accomplished shooter shoot your rifle and loads and he still gets about the same results you do, or if he shoots great groups....... now you have answered your first question.....

If you can get the opportunity to shoot a rifle of known accuracy that will also tell you if your issue is shooter error.

You might also try some high quality factory loads and see how they group. That will give you a baseline for your handloads.
