Have had some pretty expensive scopes go teats up more than once. IOR is an example and will not go down that route again, not when it takes many months to either repair or replace. Leupold has been the biggest culprit. Have had cheap scopes put through some rough treatment and hold up for years. An upper end Nikon fail on an out of state elk hunt. Also have pulled a $1000 Vortex out of the box and get warranty work on it twice before even putting it on a rifle. Then run a couple HSLR and HST on some hard charging rifles. The only scope I have confidence in is my NightForce NXS, which is over 20 y.o. technology. They are all man made mechanical devices that will fail at some point, and buy once doesn't always mean cry once. Now that the dreadfulness is over...good luck!
