The finish wasn't perfect, and it is the bare carbon color. You don't get to pick the paint color, it is base carbon.

I bought it to make a budget build lighter weight rifle for my son to carry. Works great.
Well I definitely think one of their stocks would be the way to go

I hope it is not one of these. A friend purchased one and it arrived cracked. You can see it If you zoom in at the grip/ palm swell area. It's nice but it appears too fragile.

The other rifle that deserves a look in 300 win mag is the Weatherby 307. It is about your price point and has a stock kind of like what you are looking for.

It also takes Remington 700 stocks and such i believe so it should have good aftermarket options.

I did not know they took Remington 700 stocks, that could be worth a look

Hey all, looking to put together possible a pair of rifles one for me and my girlfriend. I wanted to go barreled action, and a reasonably priced stock. I was looking at a Howa 1500 24" 308 with a heavy barrel for her, but I wanted to try a 300 Win mag for myself however, they don't have one with a heavy barrel as far as I can tell, as well as there being less stock options for a Long action howa 1500.

So for the price range of around $1000, what would people suggest for a barreled action and stock combo? Preferably a stock with a varmint/target style forend and a more traditional style comb and pistol grip. I don't have a problem spending more than that for the 300wm but really like the plan I already had for the 308 as my gf doesn't shoot all that much and the cost would be relatively inexpensive. Any ideas are much appreciated.
There are many stock options for HOWA/Weatherby VANGUARD.... KRG BRAVO, MDT to name 2..
Looking on their website, only one that is close to what id like is the HS Precision model.
MDT .....buy the .300 in the Hogue stock...sell the stock and go MDT...LOVE the Howas

I bought one of the Howa 1500 Mini barreled actions and had Satern spin up a .224 Valkyrie light varmint barrel for it. The action is extremely nice right out of the box. In 3+ decades of handling firearms no box-stock Remington that I've ever handled was even close to as nice.
I bought a trigger for the Valkyrie build and used it, but the 7.62x39 barreled action that I bought to build a compact, lightweight rifle with kept it's stock trigger because it is a nearly perfect hunting trigger.
Decades ago I had a Smith & Wesson (Howa) 1500 parkerized varminter in .223 Rem. One of two rifles that I've sold and regretted it ever since.

Howa is a solid choice.

I looked to see if Howa offers a .300 short mag and the only option is a PRC. Which is an option in the H-S Precision model and a few others. Looks like only 24's though, no 26" barrels. Were it me wanting to build this I'd buy a PRC barreled action and have a 26" .300 WSM barrel fitted to it.

Why the custom built rifles, especially for her? I have a Winchester XPR Varmint with a thumbhole stock in 6.8 Western. Light recoil, even lighter if you put a brake on it. With a good scope system mine shoots sub MOA out of the box using factory ammo, either 162 gr or 165 gr. With a good scope system you are probably looking at around $1400 or less. The XPR is also available in 300 WSM or 300 WM and is surprisingly priced around $600, so with a scope setup you are under $1000. Howa's are good, but not the only choice out there.

Custom because nobody makes exactly what I want. I've had great luck with howas and weatherbys.
