Seller’s Have you ever bailed on a deal in classifieds?

Several years back I made a deal with an older gentleman. Very nice on both sides. I tried to confirm delivery repeatedly without success, and finally cashed his check.

I honestly think he died along the way.

I've only had one really bad experience here with a member. I bought a night vision optic that was sold as "in the box". Well ... it did come in a box, but it was dirty, damaged and missing the charge wire. The seller could see exactly when the package was delivered and I was on his PM withing an hour, so he couldn't claim that I did something to it. He did deny the condition, but I sent him pictures. He refused to return my money but admitted that he bought it from a friend who used it and he never took it out of the box before shipping it to me. We went back and forth endlessly with the guy continually denying the facts and telling me that I got a good deal.

The optic was worthless to me so I sent it back and lost another $40 in shipping. At some point after receiving the unit back, he agreed to reimburse me. It took weeks to get a check from him and I lost the shipping both ways ($80) but I was glad to just get what I could.

That transaction really soured me about doing business through our classifieds for a while. However, I have since had many great transactions after a brief hiatus. I did learn to not engage in a high dollar transaction with any member that was not well established.

@grouse I've not had that happen…..yet. I've been lucky, I guess. There have been a couple that I was a little "nervous" about, but they worked out. That said, if I was getting the feelings you're getting I wouldn't hesitate to back out, James. Better that than the alternative…😐

Personally I think it has a lot to do with a person's listing and how they carry themselves during communication. It's pretty obvious the kind of deal you can expect out of a guy by how he carries himself on his listing or communication after contact.

Some guys are willing to be patient, answer any questions you might have, send pictures, whatever you want. These are the guys you want to deal with.

Some guys don't feel like answering questions, won't post or send pictures, publicly act like jerks when asked things about their items, are incomplete with their answers about their items like "it appears to be, I think it's, Google it...." essentially they are just plain arrogant and think they are above you.

It's bummer when you encounter guys like that. I always try to refer to the golden rule. Otherwise karma kinda sucks.
