Sectional Density or BC from really Big Game?

And as deeply penetrating as possible. Yet since they named that elephant head shots after Bell, I'm willing to concede that he was a better elephant marksman than I will ever be. Nowadays it's not legal to hunt elephant with a 7 X 57, but it's not on my bucket list. You know what the missy stuff between an elephants toes is called? Hunters not as good as Bell or slow natives. 😀

Diameter wise I can agree with that. Yet my shoulder prefers cases that fit inside of a standard length action. Being directed to spend some time behind the butt of a bolt action 50 BMG has cured my desire to get behind most belted magnums nowadays. YMMV.

Never shot a 50 BMG…..though, I'd like to one day.

My firearm of choice is quite portable for multiple days of moderately physical hunts……9 lbs. 1 oz fully loaded, scoped and with sling.

The recoil (no brakes allowed in our home 😉) while generous, isn't formidable. Though, it does have that "evil" belt! I prefer not to shoot more than 20 rounds in a day of shooting from the bench for 2 primary reasons: my shoulder will be a little tender (I'm old and feeble) the next day, and the most important reason being …..the cost and availability of components! 😉 memtb

I failed to mention…..it's also a "long action"! I have long arms…so, it's not a real issue! 🤣 memtb

Mac's TAC-50 is over 30 lbs as issued by Uncle Sam. A 100 rounds course of fire for weekly practice is something only sponsoring Government or Industry usually allows. Now if I only hunt here in Florida, the 7 lbs Ruger Hawkeye Scout Rifle in .308 Win handles everything that hasn't escaped from a Zoo. Side by side with a Mini Thirty Tactile.

Yup, I'm that belt and suspenders FUDD. My hunting rifles still carry iron sights as a backup. Not to mention that Warne QD rings are the standard so that I can take off a defeated scope and use the irons at a moments notice. Yup, I also have a lot of faith in the M14 and CRF Bolt Actions hunting critters without projectile weapons. But that has been proven to me under field conditions. As to H.O.G. Hunting, yup I've been proven victorious at near 2K. Otherwise I wouldn't be here to irk LR Hunters. Hey a 2K shot on a critter that can't shoot back? What's the challenge? Now LRH, well that's all about BRAVADO! Stalk a game animal until you touch it, that's a hunters skill. Drop game at 2K, that's a shooting skill. So Uncle Sam issued me a MK2 (KABAR) knife when he sent me Nam, what's LRH with a KABAR? Guess your equipment determines the maximum range you can hunt at? 🤔

My rifle is the similar…..2 leaf folding rear iron sights, Leupold QD base and rings. We (wife and I) both carry back-up scopes in Leupold QD base/rings already zero'd in our "mobile" hunting camp! memtb

Now about that iron sights hunting! Once upon a time I shot 1200 Yard Palma matches with iron sights, but back in the last millennium before Agent Orange, Time, and Tide my eyesight was a lot better. Nowadays it's only the front sight and the critter at 100 yards or less that's of any importance to me. Yet I'm still here so it must work! Nowadays, you have to beg, Barrow, or steal to get a manufacturer to equip your hunting rifles with iron sights. What a marksmanship failure. JMHO.

About 6 or 7 years ago, I found out just how badly my iron sights shooting had slipped, when I tried shoot my pistol at 100 using irons. It was pretty sad! It now wears a red dot sight! memtb

Might I suggest a little standing hunters pistol? Unsupported the ranges are 25 on scale chickens, 50 on scale pigs, 75 on devilish turkeys, and 100 on rams. Good long range pistol practice. But I must admit that I am no longer a serious competitor. My average nowadays is only 38 out of 40. It's those fashion turkies that continue to foil me. As to your rifle shooting, practice the Service Rifle course of fire out to 200 yards whenever you get the chance. Drop all that shooting jacket and hold stuff. Just you in a T-shirt and your rifle. Got to admit, at 200 standing unsupported, 10 round strings with a semi auto as inaccurate as my Mini Thirty, I average better than with a ten round mag bolt like my Hawkeye Scout. Manipulating the trigger vice manipulating the bolt tends to raise my score on paper. Even though the Service Rifle Course of Fire was created for bolt action rifles. Perhaps it's just the amount of time I spent behind M14's that predetermined my skillset?

Many years ago when metallic silhouette shooting was big…..the turkeys at 150 meters (I think) was most everyone's problem!

With irons, that ram @ 100 would need to be as big as an Angus Bull….if I wanted to put 5 on target! 😁 memtb

When I was shooting the original silhouette in Hawaii, Chickens at 100, Pigs at 200, Turkeys at 300, and Rams at 400. But that was from the creedmoor position. Today's hunters pistol is standing unsupported. Much more difficult in my humble opinion.

It's been so long….I'd forgotten! That's "mo better" than my numbers! memtb

Yup your going to make me do it! Now at 400 yards with a .44 Mag Dan Wesson and an 8 inch barrel I could clean house on 2 banks of 10 Rams (smaller than deer) with 265 grain Hornady Projectiles and IMR 4227 powder. (load withheld for safety purposes). So any shot taken inside of 400 Meters with a rifle isn't Long Range since folks with pistols shot clean rounds over and over. A bit off topic, or perhaps not, 265 Grain .430 may still be over .3 SD?
