Scope Mounting

How much gap are you seeing between the caps and the base mounts after fully the caps screws are fully torqued? I have seen a one piece (IIRC Talley) not hold up on a 300WM with a lighter scope than you'e using went to rail and separate rings problem solved. Definitely seems to be a lack of precise fit between tube and rings. Rick's suggestion might be the only way to rectify the situation.

@Allen Kitts Here you go…..I've done this to many scope rings with excellent results. It explains the scope ring bedding process towards the end of the article. @Rick Richard was 'dead on'…..as usual. 😉

Permatex Black Gasket cement works great. Acts like heavy rubber cement. Goes on easy, squeezes to ultra-thin film. Comes right off when you de-mount the scope - and no scratches from the rings. I'm not a smith - I just play one on LRH - BUT - I've had 3 different smiths show me this trick on guns they built for me. I highly recommend it. Plus - there is no downside.

Hate the idea of grinding the ring surfaces.....ouch!

For clarity - the permatex is spread on the inside of both sides of the ring. Torque it down, wipe off the excess - looks great - works great. Easy Peasy....

More clarity - the vast majority of scope slippage is a friction problem, not a screw problem. You can blue or red locktite the screws and the scope can/will still slip.

Thanks for the info.

A simple thing I do when possible is to slide the scope forward so the turret block is against the forward ring. Under recoil the scope tries to stay in place and rifle moves to the rear, mounting it against the forward ring stops that possibility.

Huh, some of the gasket adhesive/sealant etc. etc. are actually rosin. Like this

I am not a fan of using anything in the rings, I have had to use shim stock before to get more out of the scope but didnt like doing that. I hone my rings to true them up, the rod I used for this I had turned. You must be careful honing and also careful not to crimp the tube what ever path you choose. I think I have, way in the past, laid a file to top half on the flats and took 0.001 or 0.002 off to get that little bit of extra squeeze out of it.

I am half a cup of coffee in and was struggling to think of the black stuff lol…

Black permatex as suggested above is the only way to go!! please!!

My why is this- Wyoming wilderness hunt. After 6 years of preparation I lost my rifle out of the scabbard fell off the horse. We backtracked and found the rifle dusty but perfectly fine! Trijicon scope fyi. Point being I had read here about the permatex solution and had total confidence my setup had what it took to deliver.

It is simple to do and the piece of mind is priceless! Have some cotton swabs handy to clean up the squish around the rings…
