Just picked up an excellent Ruger #1 AB in 338 Federal and wandering what the value is?
Someone told me there were very few made in 338 Federal.
Any offering of info regarding this configuration would be welcomed.
Thanks

choperzrul,

Thank you for the input.
I did understand that they were a bit rare but just wanted someone else to chime in.
I did get 2 boxes of Federal Fusion 200 grain ammo and a full box of 100 ct Midway factory second 185 grain bonded projectiles and a new unopened set of RCBS reloading dies in the deal.
It does have a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 scope above that I'd like to trade for a 2-8 one day.
Has 8 rounds thru it.

It should be a shooter. I just picked up a (reported) unfired #1 in 25-06 that was mfg in 1977 or so.

I've got a newly built LR308 sitting in the safe with a Shilen 338 Federal barrel on it. Sooner or later it will percolate to the top of my project list and I'll get some load development done on it.

So sorry Buddy, No Experience with that very handsome rifle. I wish you good shooting and good hunting!! I hope to find a Ruger #1 , in 300 H and H some day. Just for the pleasure of shooting!!

My wife hunted with a Tikka in .338 Federal for years until she lost it in a fire. It was exceptionally effective at the ranges she hunted and was very comfortable for her to shoot, being a petite senior. Yet, it allowed her to hunt elk and moose with a cartridge she knew could do the job, and it gave her some measure of confidence at those times when a grizzly was close by. I loaded it with 185gr Barnes at over 2800 fps for large game and the 160gr Barnes at over 3000 fps for deer, which I believe showed it to be an extremely efficient hunting caliber. After she had used it for a few years I built a .338-06 because so many good bullets were coming out in this caliber, and it became my favourite rifle for hunting big game.

Thank you for the information on the effectiveness of the round. I have several other hunting rifles but always wanted a #1 and happy to find one in this caliber to boot!

Below is what the 42nd Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values (copyright 2021) says:

STURM, RUGER & CO., INC.
NO. 1-AB
Various cals., .204 Ruger (mfg 2006-2008) cal., 22 in. barrel, checkered walnut stock and forearm. Mfg., 1967-1968, 1982-1983, 2006, 2008). Although uncatalogued beginning in 2009, very limited runs of this model in various calibers have continued to be produced by Ruger including a rare chamber in .338 Federal in 2016 and 2017.

100% - $1000
98% - $750
95% - $625
90% - $500
80% - $400
70% - $350
60% - $300
Last MSR - $1147

Add 20% for .338 Federal cal.
The "AB" suffix designates semi-beavertail forearm with light barrel.

Hope this helps. I saw they were accepting orders for the 43rd edition a month or so ago so don't know if it is out yet so there could be slightly better info available.

KSAv8r,
Thank you for that info!
That is exactly what I was interested in. Just to have an idea.
It's been fired 8 rounds and I have the original Fed Fusion ammo box bought with the rifle. I'd say 98% only because it's been fired. Not a nick or scratch anywhere.
It'll be staying with me for now.

Thanks again for all the info given by a great group of people here in the site!!
