RL26 in 7-300 win mag

Great stuff guys - thanks. No space for reload equip here in San Diego -(my wife's heirloom Xmas decorations - fricking boxes of them - are more important for the garage space of course) But do remember well growing up in Klamath Falls, Ore - in the 50's - and many of my buddys' dads reloaded in their basements. We had a workshop - but Ole Doc Schiff didn't reload. However - he/we had a friend who was a gunsmith (who was also a butcher for our deer and yearly steer) - and we always had the right mix of ammo for the .32 Winchester Special - Model 94 - and the Sporterized Springfield 03- in 30.06 or course. Most of our shots were in timber - sometimes pretty thick - usually under 100 yards - but even at my now old age age - I want to go out and pling plates at 1,000 yards. Just bought a Tikka T3X lite - in 6.5 Creed - well - I really laid it away - unbeknowst to my wife - who would just say - Why do you need another rifle? We just don't have the space. :)

I'll probably start at 70 as I have no interest in the lower velocity node. Thanks for the info!

I read and re read your post with interest.. and the main reason was, is I have a rifle that is my favorite of all the rifles that I own.. The barrels are the same exactly but mine is the heavy and my muzzle diameter is 0.9955.. Also my action is a Remington 700. Now to get down to the nitty gritty.

What kid of brass are you using? I use once fired 300 Win Mag and nothing except Hornady and the only thing I do to them is clean (tumble with stainless steel pins) for about 4 to 6 hours, turn the necks by hand with care, inside and out. I run a neck sizer down to .2750. + or - 2 thous. OAL 2.62... From there on I prime with Winchester Large Rifle Magnums..

Here is where we differ in round load.. I am not saying that you are wrong, fact I am going to try some of yours with the RL26..

I have had some luck with the H1000. But the best that I have been able to use is the Hornady ELD-X
or the ELD MATCH in 180 Grain for both.. I have also had the best luck with the heat shield rounds..

H-1000
69 gr. 6 rends. 3309,3142,3142,3149,3275,3142
69.5gr. 3053,3059,3158,3169,3166,3158,3160
over that at 72 gr. 3201,3200,3201,3203, 3203

Over that I had blown primers and the round never made it to the 500 yard target before they blew up..
Now to the H4350 This powder is the one that I have primarily used and still use today and have 500 ronds loaded with H4350, and 69.5 Gr.

I hope this helps and I STRESS TO YOU to use caution and work your way up to the ones I have mentioned

Knapper

If I load anything hotter than 69 grain, of retumbo, H-1000, or either of the 4350's.. None of the bullets will hold together to make it for 500 yards. They just blow up and some will blow up in less than 350
yards

Sandstrom22- Yes I did find a load with both H1000 and RL26. They both shoot 1/2 MOA or better easy. I went with 72.5g H1000 which is good for right at 3000fps. 71g of RL26 gave 3025fps. I took 1st place with the rifle/load at my first LR shoot out to 1100 yards. This was the ladder test at 300 yards with both powders and the 180g ELDMS. And a 300 yard group with the H1000 load to confirm.
