Retumbo for a 6.5x284 load

This is a super old thread but to answer your question many of us have been using retumbo for years with excellent results. I have gotten better extreme spread and standard deviation running magnum primers versus standard large rifle but they both work.

Another powder that works as well as retumbo for me is RL26. I have been happy with both.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll tag in on this one.

I have a 6.5x284 28" cut rifled barrel. Using Lapua brass, and Fed 215M's, which powder charge would you START with Retumbo?

Edit: forgot to add I'm using 140 Berger VLD Hunting. Also, do most of you start with a seating depth test at a middle of the road charge weight? I'm thinking of starting 0.005" off since this is a hunting rifle.

I would work up from 56gr. My loads are 57gr/Fed215m and 58gr/Fed210M Lapua Brass. Berger 140 VLD, .075" off the lands with two rifles, .020"
With the third. 3000FPS in my 26" barrel.

Thanks. You seem to be well versed on this cartridge. Is your COAL ~3.15" for those? Norma reamer?

when I ran Berger it was 56.5 grains with 215m at 3100, 28". My rifles also like 56.5 and 210m at 3050.

Thank you. Do you notice any ES/SD differences between the 210m and 215m? I have plenty of both.

Berger 140 56.3 H1000 F210M 0.010" off Lapua 26" 3020 fps

Cool. I have H1000 as well. What was your COAL?

Yes, my COAL is in that range, and to Norma specs. Some makers using the Norma dimension will run their throats a bit less (.150" vs the .188" spec) to allow the shooter to chase the lands without running out of neck for the bullet. I have seen no difference in performance with this range of throat with 140gr bullets.

I have a few 6,5x284's. I get very similar velocity(3000FPS), ES(<12), and accuracy(<.5MOA) interchanging 58gr of Retumbo with Fed210M's and 57gr of Retumbo with Fed215M's....with all three rifles. This was useful when primers were in short supply under the dictatorship of Obama. Also, I suppose if one was concerned with ignition in sub zero temps, the 215M's could provide an extra measure of insurance. I haven't experienced this issue though.

COAL 3.116" I ran the Berger seating depth test and they all grouped the same but this COAL was 0.010" off and had the lowest ES.
It is nice to be able to shoot groups and get velocities at the same time, that is why I love my Labradar.

With retumbo I noticed a lower es/sd. Single digits for me. I drop about .5 grains usually.

I run retumbo in 1 and RL 26 in the other and switched to 147's. I had es of 4 and sd of 1.5. However I have only tested 210's with RL 26. It works so well I haven't messed with.

I have two 6.5-284 both shoot H4831sc 54.5-56.5 grain with the VLD 140. One shoots a F210 primer the other is CCI Magnum. Has everyone on here tried the Horn 143 ELD-X in their 284's. I shoot them out of my 6.5 GAP 4s (SAUM) but I would like to shoot them with my hunting 284.

We're going to work up a load with Retumbo in our 6.5-284's. 26" Broughton 5C's. We have Lapua Brass, 210M's, 215M's and BR2's and 142 SMK's. Brass is all fire formed. Thinking of starting at 56.5 and working up to 59 in .5 grain increments and groups of 3 for each charge. Which primer to start with and what seating depth???

I'd start with the 210M, and the 142SMK's at 020" off the lands.

Got out today to sight in and do initial seating depth test. Most info is on the target, seating depth was measure with the Comparator.

Excited to do ocw on groups 4 and 5! Will go up to 57.5 grains, 28" barrel.
