Remington 700 30-06 issues

Clean the heck out of it. The last two customer rifles we got took hours of cleaning to get the copper fouling out. Probably never been cleaned with a good copper solvent. Once they were clean they shot much better. SD's got better and overall pressure went down significantly.

I also agree with others that the sporter barrel will have a tough time with a 5 shot string. By the way, in my book a barrel that is hot enough to be hard to hold on to is way too hot.

Barrels are cheap compared to wild goose chases.
A 1 MOA in in that era was a unicorn. Now its a $225 package junk gun.
Barrels have gotten quite a bit better. If you wanna chase all the geese first I would CLEAN IT. Most guns have never been cleaned PROPERLY. Once clean, bed it and see where you're at.
Remember 1.5 MOA was "GOOD" accuracy in that day according to most.

Been there, done that, won't go on that hunt again...
