Reloder 17 and barrel wear......

Anyone else noticing premature or faster barrel wear with this powder?

It is the second powder that I have taken notes on using side by side with either H1000 or Retumbo that definitely showed conclusive evidence of eroding throats quicker. The other powder is RL25.
I had 2 barrels in 25-300WSM and 2 barrels in 6.5-300WSM, all on the same Win Model 70 action switch barrel. RL17 toasted one barrel in half the shots as H1000 did. This was mirrored in the 6.5 using RL25. RL25 also gave me the best groups and velocity in 1 of my 25-06's, the other 2 liked Retumbo. Again, the throat was much worse sooner using RL25 over Retumbo.

So, yes, have seen it and noted it.

Did you see better precision and velocity with reloader 17 over h4350? That is my experience that reloader 17 just outperforms h4350 in both of those metrics and maybe I would get over 4k shots out of a 260 or 260ai barrel but at that point I always choose precision and speed over a little longer barrel life

I burn a lot of RL17 and it does erode the throat faster than H4350. I've got 2 6XC barrels that I've been shooting 1 for each powders. At 500 rounds the RL17 barrel looks horrible. So I switched the other barrel to RL17 and watched it closely. You could see the wear begin immediately. Both of these barrels still shoot great but takes some more frequent abrasive cleaning. My shooting partner saw the same thing in a 6x47 lapua. I won't stop using it, I have found my scores are higher with it and still have 15 pounds. Will be sad day when it's gone.

I think the better question is "does double-based powder (RL17) causes barrel wear faster than single-based powder ( H4350, H1000, Retumbo, etc.)?" since it contains a combination of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin (generates more performance) as the essential components vs. nitrocellulose for single-based powders.

Thank you. I am monitoring round count and just waiting for a decline in accuracy to note the arc of decay.

No. I found H4350 the more accurate powder than R17 which is one reason I am using it up in a single barrel to monitor further.

R17 tended to generate faster velocities than equal charges of H4350 in larger cases like the 280AI and .30/06 and even the .338 Winchester but stayed within 20fps or so in smaller cases like the 7x57.

H4350 for comp and 760 for hunting, which by the way, is the nicest powder on throats I have experienced, actually all Winchester ball powders are great, not the fastest, but often very accurate.

The big thing I've noticed with 17 is I can watch it walk up as a hot summer day wears on from sunrise to past noon. I only used h4350 in my first 260 barrel and first 260ai barrel and though it shot good in most people's eyes, the 17 results always were twice as good and more velocity.

I guess I'll see how many or how much my 7-08 & 308win will take. A good substitute is hunter or big game. Hunter is possibly my or will be my go-to in 7-08
