Reboring to 338

I have asked a few about setting barrels back and re-chambers. Most won't do it, so definitly get that lined up first if you do the re-bore. Most prefer to start witha blank slate.

GAP offered to have my old 280 AI barrel set back and rechambered to 7 PRC when I was having issues with it, so I know they'll do it. My friend in Nevada is also a really great smith who will do anything.

Not today my friend. 338 anything is expensive.

I'd save about ~500 going with the rebore route.
I just looked at prices of Varget and holy hell. Okay, scratch that. 4 lb of Varget and 150 HHTs

Long range Red Ryder seems pretty cost effective nowadays. I think the Rokslide crowd would endorse it for elk too.

What profile is your current barrel? Is it fluted? My concern would be the amount of meat left in the barrel depending on contour and fluting (if any).

From what I've read, you'd likely have good results with the rebore, for if it were me, I'd start with a new barrel.

It's a Proof medium sporter. It's like Arby's... It's got the meat. Especially if I had it cut down to 22 or 20".

The general rule of thumb for rebores is to subtract the groove diameter from the muzzle diameter then divide that by 2 for the material left on each side of the hole. Again the general rule of thumb is to have 0.150" left per side after the reboring.

0.649" - 0.338" = 0.311"

0.311/2 = 0.155"

So, by this criteria, the suggested rebore is a success.

As usual, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Some are just a tiny bit more prejudice...

$60 a pound for Varget it is around and available but that's the cost in southern middle Tennessee
