Ramblings and Such From Hunting Coyote

I have never personally witnessed any animal going after a coyote , although I have watched outdoor videos that have shown various critters going after them .
I have had several friends tell me , and I have read about the fact that a donkey will try to kill coyotes , often times with great success .

nicholasjohn thank you .A lot of us went some made it back , some didn't and some come home but their mind didn't fair so well . We have a lot of people that have been in the middle east with this last conflict . It was an experience that I wouldn't trade either I'm glad I went but I'm glad I don't need to again . Bill Cauley , I haven't seen many donkeys in use for awhile . They would kill a dog or coyote if they got the chance . Some people had problems with them staying with the heard and some people had a problem with them being mean to the other live stock . But if you are making your living with stock you will do what you can to keep them alive . I saw a video one time that showed a donkey killing a mountain lion that was interesting I would have liked to see that in person . We had a guy that lived on the mountain and had two that he just let run they survived for 15 or 20 years on their own at around 7500 feet summer, spring , fall and winter tough little guys both were Jacks or they probably would have multiplied . I miss seeing them along the road now that they are gone I had to respect them for their tenacity .

Our family lost a couple of good men in Viet Nam, and I know a few more who came home but weren't ever the same. I've talked at great length with guys I work with who fought in the various wars in the middle east, and there was some pretty ugly stuff going on over there, too. One guy in particular was an infantryman in the Marine Corps, and he was my co-pilot for a several round-the-world trips. Way too much time at cruise altitude on those long ocean crossings. I heard more than I was ready to hear on more than one occasion. I think I'll leave it at that.

Another guy I worked with had a couple of Sicilian donkeys. Little bitty guys, but each was a ball of fire. He went out to harvest his sweet potatoes one day, and they came over to the fence so say hello. One was pretty well crusted up with dried blood, and the other was limping. The pack of feral dogs that bloodied them up like that didn't make out so well - there were four or five carcasses inside the fence, and a couple of blood trails leading off into the woods. He told me he washed them down and gave them each a shot of penicillin, and thought about suturing one of them. He changed his mind because he didn't think the donkey was "in the mood for suturing." Last I heard, they were both OK, and they looked just fine in a picture he sent. He also sent a picture of a sweet potato that was as big as his head - some old-fashioned "heirloom variety" from the hills of eastern Kentucky. One he cut open was orange inside, with purple streaks running through it. He says "they taste like heaven on earth" and make his wife can make a pie out of them that would make you go home and slap yo' mama.

nicholasjohn , I met a guy from Tn. and he was telling me one time about some good BBQ he said it was so good that it would make your tongue slap your mouth silly . I enjoy some of the things people say to describe things it's great . Bill both of my Grandparents used mules to farm with when they were growing up . they both told me if you get a good mule there isn't a better natured or working animal and a good team is a joy to work with . Grandma said if you had a mule that was good for riding you wouldn't want a horse again . They both told me a bad mule was to be gotten rid of ( shot) as it would hurt you bad and could never be made into a good mule . Grandpa was born in 1901 . Grandma was born in 1913 . So much has changed since then .

nicholasjohn I love to fly but I think that long over the oceans would become boring and I could see myself becoming complacent and not paying close attention to my instruments . I still love the sound of a UH1 and C130's . One morning I was out South of town calling coyote . I walked out to a cut bank that was about 3 feet high then slipped over and made myself comfortable with my back up against the bank . The sun was coming up to my back it was a nice morning with the meadow larks singing a few small clouds drifting in the sky . I make my own howlers , I started with my interrogation howls . Two howls a bark then another howl wait a few min and repeat . in the sun out in front of me a shadow appeared from the cut bank right above me it was looking around the valley to my front . What do I do now was my thoughts . About that time back in the distance I heard a chopper it was coming fast and low then it slowed the coyote jumped off the bank and ran for it . A red UH1 came straight over me about 5 feet off the ground lined out on the coyote . They ran him then the gunner shot twice down it went . The chopper landed picked the coyote up then flew off . I don't think they even knew I was any where around . I never did find out who the chopper belonged to and never saw it again . We have some wealthy people around here True's own a CH47 Chinook painted black that they fly around here . We have a guy from California that has bought a lot of ranches but as far as I know his people only fly fixed wings . And all of his stuff is painted white with his brand on the doors .

You like sayings like this? Gets the point driven home.

He says "they taste like heaven on earth" and make his wife can make a pie out of them that would make you go home and slap yo' mama.

How about this one?
"It went over your head like a sweater"...............use this one when people do not catch a clue.

My wife and I went over to see her sister and brother in law last winter . It was in the twenties so I had my coat on , I wear a carhartt artic grade coat in brown color . My wife's sister looked at me then said you need to buy a new coat that ones way too big for you . If you want I can give you a few lessons on how to shop for clothes that fit . I looked at her smiled and said no thanks this one is fine . She continued to tell my how I looked like S!&((^%$ and needed a coat that fit tighter . Finally I said well Val there is a reason this coat is so big I can tell you have never worked out in the cold for a 12 hour day . I wear this size coat as a top layer . When it's cold out I have a tee shirt then a thermal under shirt top , then a heavy shirt . And if it's windy I'll put on a carhartt vest then this coat on top of it all and still be able to move as well as have air pockets in between the layers to help insulate me from the cold . So when you have worked out in the cold and wind for a 12 hour day you can come and give me lessons on how to buy my clothes . It took about an hour for her to say any more to me and my wife gave me a talking too latter but they both know why I buy over sized coats now and they might even understand it also .
