Ramblings and Such From Hunting Coyote

A lot of people underestimate their intelligence and the abilities they have to figure out problems . That's why I don't believe they will ever go away . As far as I have seen they are probably the most persecuted animal in the United States if they could have been eradicated they would have been in the 1920's and 30's . In 1972 President Nixon banned the use of poisons for coyote control here they still for the most part don't eat things that humans have handled . They don't know why just that for generations they have passed on the knowledge from generation to generation not to eat things that humans have handled . When their population is higher they aren't as cautious as when their numbers are lower . One reason is when they have higher numbers you also have more coyote that aren't well trained yet . When their number are lower you have fewer coyote that haven't been trained and they are the ones that have lived by being cautious to begin with . We as humans tend to skim the cream off the top ( we take the easy route killing the easy coyote and leave the hard to get coyote which in turn then breed to other coyote that aren't easy to get because by their very nature they are cautious so in the end their pups are for the most part cautious as well with just a few of them that aren't as cautious for us humans to then kill the easy ones again the cycle is repeated over and over . Then someone places a call to people like Ed , Gene or myself that will take the time and put in the effort to take on the challenge of tracking down the hard to get problem coyote . We take pride in the successful completion of that challenge and our abilities to take the time and study to figure out those coyote that make the average coyote hunter scratch their head and ask what am I doing wrong .

A couple of years ago I got a call from a friend of mine . He was saying he knew that he had coyote around but that they weren't talking at all any time of the year . I asked him so does your neighbor have guard dogs with his sheep ? Yea why ? Well think about it if every time you had said something as a kid your dad slapped you along side of the head , how long would it have taken you to learn not to say anything ? So your coyote talk and then the guard dogs show up and chase them kick their butts and kill one or two of them . They learned not to talk .

I'll be heading over to eastern Washington this weekend and hopefully un educate one. Kyle just started building a house and he's the general so it might be a quick hunt. Hauling some stuff over for him @ +$6 a gallon for fuel. Ridiculous

It's getting the time when the control worker has been busy for a couple of months now and the pace should begin to slow down for them till late August or early September when this years pups are coming in to learn to kill . Gene was telling me that there weren't enough smaller prey animals the last few summers to keep the coyote from moving in to the sheep and lambs and that it really didn't slow down for him till after the fall dispersal of the years pups . As I'm traveling , I have noticed more small prey animals this year , a bunch of prairie dogs , more rabbits then in the last several years . The antelope and deer numbers are still low due to the diseases that have been running through the herds the past few years here . Life for the wildlife runs in cycles with the numbers increasing to the load limits of the land then a plunge in numbers for a few years to a low where you start to wonder if there will be a come back for them but they slowly do have an increase in their numbers . With the disease and drought it's been a rough few years for all of the animals around here , even the livestock numbers have been reduced due to the lack of forage for them .

Only seen 2 coyotes so far and the were bookin into supreme cover. Realizing this pickup hunting for coyotes at long distances might need some snow lol. Took a few pics. These farmlands are my me boggling big

They aren't just another dumb animal as we were told when we were kids lol . They are still here because they aren't . I have to respect them for several reasons and that's just one of the reasons . After you have been around them and studying them for a while more you will start to figure out more reasons to respect them . Some people turn it to hate towards them . For me you can't rush anything with a coyote . I planed on being there when they made their last mistake , and maybe being the reason for them making it . Please share some of the strategies with us that Kyle shared with you if it's okay with him , They aren't nick named the trickster for nothing .

That area resembles eastern Montana and North Dakota a lot of open grain fields . Does it have roads around each section of land making it look like a giant checker board from the air ? Some guys run coyote with dogs in that type of terrain .
It does have a lot of 1 mile squares. It was helpful for ranging. There's some chunks that don't have roads and not sure how many square miles. Pretty much from Moses lake to Richfield if I understood him correctly and not sure how far north. Mind boggling. Everything is in full growth and even the deer can hide in the middle of a field right now unless it's one of the dry fields they rotate and it's dirt now. There were deer everywhere! I told Kyle I think the deer have hanged up and killed all the coyotes. It was incredibly interesting. Set a white bucket on a fence exactly 1 mile and karma struck and the old guy that owns a small 100 came out to mow along his road ha ha! We went back over and bs'ed with him for a while. He showed us a spot he has a gong at 800 and Kyle told him we're he could get water and filled him in on everything around him. He butts up to a state piece where Kyle helped clean out a bunch of garbage and abandoned cars and set up this water trap thing. Was really cool but time ran out and I had to get going. Would have been cool to shoot the mile but maybe next time. Told Kyle to catch a bunch of coyotes and spray them white and thin some of those deer out so some coyotes can come back ha ha

Neither of us are anywhere near your level. Kyle said he noticed they would run them past a coyote hiding in the sage and it would attack the fawn which was what got him all fired up. He said one of the two that we saw was one of this years pups. I actually only saw the one but my eyesight is nowhere as good as his. He knows a little bit about them, he helps his buddy Archie that owns a huge beef farm once in a while just for something to do and he said they hid and called some in and shot them with shotguns. I'm hoping to get back over in the fall when the pelts are worth something and give it another go. So busy, hard to find the time plus fuel was pretty spendy

I don't know when they are prime there , here the fox will be prime by the end of October the coyote will be prime by mid November and the cats will be by near the end of December . The animals don't care if it's cold or not they prime because of the amount of day lite hours and a hormonal change caused by that . The canines will how ever begin to break , singe or rub on the hips due to setting on snow and freezing their fur into the snow and ice then when they stand up it breaks off or pulls out and the singing happens from the sun reflecting off of the snow and ice causing the tips of the fur to curl and become brittle then look burned thus the term singing .
