Ramblings and Such From Hunting Coyote

I have been told that they are all white meat and don't taste bad . I don't like their smell and never did try cooking a lion or bobcat , I did give a couple of bobcats to a guy that ate them . I have seen where they clawed the side of a cabin and sprayed it with urine . It seemed like the cats some people keep as pets scratching and spraying their area . My guess is that cats have some similarities no matter their size . The cats I have skinned were all mussel , big forearms with mussels crossing their backs .They were built for grabbing and holding onto things . Large hind leg muscles running up the spine . It looked like they were designed to jump and or drag things well . The heads were wide and had well muscled jaws for gripping and tearing with good molars , canines and incisors on the younger ones . Even the older ones with worn and missing teeth were still well muscled .

It's pretty interesting that the stripped upper receivers that were 110.00 dollars 3 months ago are 37.00 today . One of the other receivers I looked at 4 months ago was 250.00 and yesterday it was 199.00 . Now if the price of loaded ammo and components to load with will follow suit .

Winter came back last night it's been snowing all day with wind gusts in the 40 mph area , again no unnecessary travel on the interstate due to icy conditions with blowing and drifting snow .
Coyotes were moving mid-day here, even though it's sunny snd in the mid-70's with 15-20 mph winds. 😀
This morning I set traps along trails leading to a freshly dead heifer who died during calving.
According to a ranch hand, she had been dead less than an hour when the coyotes started feeding on her.
They were probably in the brush waiting for the calf to drop...
So, I repositioned her carcass to allow a couple of shooting lanes from hides a couple of hundred yards away and set traps on the trails leading to her.
Now it's my turn to predate...😎

Nice!

Many years ago I had a friend that was a Veterinarian . It was in January one year with about 10 inch's of snow on the ground and hadn't gotten above freezing in a week . I caught a smaller dog in one of my traps she had a collar on with a name tag that told me the owners name and address . She was friendly so I took her out of the trap looked her foot over and saw that it had frozen . I knew where her owner lived so I took her home as it was 30 miles from town I told the lady that I would take her with me to the vet if she wanted . I took Baby with me to my friend , it ended up that she lost part of her left front paw to frost bite , a couple or toes . I picked her up and took her home in a couple of days . Mike didn't charge me for his services with a bill but I ended up helping him at his practice a few times to pay him back for what he did . I got to go over to his place one day when he asked if I could help him . He had a big dog that he needed help with getting it on the table and doing some repair work on it's back end . It had a gapping hole in one hip and a smaller hole in the other one . We got it on the table cleaned it up and he sewed it as best he could . We then took it and placed it in a kennel near the floor level to recover . Mikes comment to me was I sure wish that people would learn how to shoot better so that they wouldn't cause animals like this dog suffer so much either make clean kills or not shoot .

Thankfully my wife has only had to deal with gun shot wounds just a handful of times over the last 17 years as a tech. Mainly all birdshot, couple 22s, and BB/pellets. But the stories she could tell on everything else there....OH BOY LOL!

Has it been your experience that coyotes will not eat dead cows that have been doctored in some way? I've heard that several times.

The neighbor had cows on the corn stalks next to our place and we noticed one died right before they took them out. They hauled them into the tree grove on the other side of the quarter from our place. That was about 2 weeks ago and the other day I asked if I could hunt over them at night with thermal and he said sure, go ahead kill any coyotes you see. He hunts pheasants and they've been scarce for a few years now.

I went back and checked during the day and there were 3 dead cows, and nothing had been touched. A week ago I saw 3 coyotes at night going across the field in that direction so I'm sure guessing they would have found them but maybe not. I didn't think to ask if the cows had been doctored.

For the most of my time I noticed that the coyote around here wouldn't touch an animal if it had been handled by humans unless it got real cold for a long time and they got pretty hungry . I figured it was still a carry over from all of the bait stations around this part of the country before Nixon banned the use of poisoned baits in 1972 . And being Leary of humans to begin with around here from all of the pressure we give them .
