Question for you 7mm Rem Mag Elk Killers?

Rev-from left field and in no way does this assist in your quest for a 160 but...the 120 TTSX is a rock star along with R22!

Im going to try out some 131 Shock Hammers over RS Grand. It should be humming! My concern on the lighter bullets (even Mono) is if, God forbid, I wound it and then need to break it down with a hard angling shot (an Elmer Keith "Raking Shot"). That's alot of meat/big bone/maybe the edge of a grass filled paunch. No am ideal situation, but they do come up. Opinions?

I used the 131 Hammer Hunter (I don't see a Shock Hammer in this size) extensively in my 7mm Wby for antelope. I've never seen anything kill faster or more consistently. It's a "DRT" load.
I have also used the 146 Hammer Hunter on elk with great results, and it will penetrate right through.

My Dad has used his 7mm Wby with the Barnes 150 TTSX for everything from deer and antelope to elk with stellar results as well. The longest penetration I recall is full length on an antelope.

I'm really happy with the 168 gr Berger VLDs out of my 7mm RM. I've shot two elk with it and several animals in Africa. Most recently the bull elk was at about 330 yds and was dead on his ft after the 1st shot, he tipped over on the 2nd. Same with the kudu at 85 yds just stood there and tipped over after the 2nd shot. A big waterbuck in Africa, also at about 330 yds, tipped over after one shot on the quartering too shoulder. Only thing that took multiple shots was a Burchell's Zebra stallion and that was a combination of bad bullet placement and a poor job reading the wind; shots were 350-500 yds.

How is the 160 Accubond on penetration/breaking bones, etc? The 160 Partition is the one I have "shot" alot before, in several 7mms, I loaded it to 2950 in that first BDL and a friend used it in Colorado on elk just fine. No kills with it personally for me. The Nosler "Manual" listed my load as 3100, but a guy at the range clocked it. "Ruined that load for me...I "wanted" that 3100!! ha

the only accubond ive recovered was right at their advertised weight retention, mine was 71%. from my 7mag into an antelope quartering hard to me, almost facing me at about 70 yards. shot him in the neck/shoulder junction, shattered his shoulder blade, found the bullet near his nuts.

can't remember what the partitions weight retention is...but i was thinking less than 70. I like the a-frames a lot. i load 175gr a-frames for my pops in his 7RUM. those have knocked the s*** out of a few elk in an impressive manner.

This is a 160 accubond from my 280 AI with a MV a little over 2950 fps. Under 150 yards through both shoulders. Bullet was protruding through hide. Weight is 106 grains.

160 Speer boatail (top) or Accubond (bottom) will do the job @ 7RM velocities. Two differences are price $.34 vs $1.12 and the AB is ~.100" longer than the Speer and both have tangent ogive shapes so the AB has the slightly better BC .531 vs .519 for the speer. The AB may take up more case volume since the nose design appear very similar between the two. I've found the Speer bullets to be very accurate and effective on elk in my 270 using 150gr and my grandfather used 150gr hot cores for all of his elk loads in 270 and harvested many cows and I spotted for him on a 5X5 bull cross canyon shot ~450yds(didn't have hand held range finders in those days). These two 7mm + Berger 175EH and Sierra 165 TGK are the bullets I will load and test in a new 280AI build I have underway. I think the two shown here are good out to 500ish but any longer range than that I would go with the Berger or Sierra.
