Prairie Dog Hunt?

I have a buddy that goes with a guide every year. Sounds like lots of fun. How many rounds of ammo do yall take?

The amount of ammo. a guy could and might blow through can vary a lot depending on a few factors. Such as time of year, weather conditions and shooting style.
If a guy waits to go when the pups are all up and active, the shooting will be better than a month or two before the pups emerge. If the weather is cloudy and or rainy, the p-dogs aren't as active all day. And if a guy just likes to shoot at every p-dog he can see no matter the distance, he could blow through a bunch of ammo too, or if a guy doesn't like to miss and sits with some patience for closer targets, he won't blow through nearly as much, but probably kill as many or more.

Having lived in Colorado 5 years a good ways back I now would always hire a guide before attempting a prairie dog hunting trip and it would be great to collect an antelope for the larder while I'm there.

Gas is very expensive and I still work so 4 days of driving to and from Florida and 4-5 days of shooting is what I'm after.

If you spend a couple or three days scouting for prairie dog towns you can shoot at, you can burn through a lot of money quick in gas, lodging, and food.

In my experience most prairie dog, coyote, and antelope guides offer lodging and meals in a package price. It can be even cheaper to just pay a guide and be assured of some quality trigger time and something for the freezer when you leave.

Just one man's opinion...

We go for three days and shoot 200-500 rounds you never know

IMO that's low. I've only ever been out shooting prairie dogs once, me and 2 buddies set up on a prairie dog town we each cranked off 80-100 rounds in about 2 hours. it's hard to say if I've ever had that much fun behind a rifle.

For sure low, depends on the area though

I've had 1000 round days....it was not cheap, but worth every penny

1000rounds/day
Say average 2 rounds/minute-including lunch- potty breaks- neck stretch breaks/ moves/ cool the barrel/switch guns and ammo.
comes to 500 minutes or 8.3 hours.
I suppose it is possible with a good spotter, an AR and a really great dog town.
Sounds like fun
Good luck with your shooting and Merry Christmas

It's been a long time, we were basically the only ones shooting a little over 1000 acres of private land in western NE. It has decent hills and vantage points all over, if one area got slow you could just hike over to another hill and go to town for another half hour. A lot of shots were under 200 yards, but we definitely pushed 500+ with .223 often. That's where a lot of our ammo went out as follow up shots lol. We generally didn't spot for each other since you could just stay in the scope and find more. The wind out there is never still, 10 mph is probably the least you will get on a typical day. Good times, the land has changed hands through several people and 800 acres of it I probably won't be able to get permission any more.

Sounds like a dream hunt for when I was younger. Now,I go 2-3 times a year for about a week at a time.
I couldn't keep up the pace now. Good story.
