Powder & Primers for 308 win???

My favorites, in order, are Win 748, Varget, IMR 4064.

All shoot VERY well with Sierra 168 MK's.

I ordered a big supply of Varget and Fed 210M primers, they should be hear soon.

I will post my results.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

Varget is a very versatile powder, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I use it in everything from 223 up through 308.

Gary,
Can you imagine anyone putting anything except Varget into a .308 Win.?!@#? Shudder to think of doing that, right! I know guys who would stir Varget into their coffee in the morning...

Adi2208 start at 44 grains for 155 grain projectile and work up to a maximum of 47. For 175 grain start around 42 grains work up until you find the most accurate load.

I am using the following: Winchester case, CCI BR2 primer, Sierra 175 MK, and 45.0gr Varget. From a factory Rem 700VS, this nets about 2750fps, good ES/SD, and what I considered pretty good accuracy (1.25-1.5"@300yds). I seated this batch to 2.810" (listed magazine length) which unfortunately leaves a jump to the lands of 0.155"!!! Amazingly, the load still shoots!

My next step will be to experiment w/ IMR 4064 and 4895, as I have some of each on hand, and fiddle w/ seating depth, possible out to the lands, as the 175 SMKs are long enough to do it and stay in the case

I know the OP wanted it for the lighter stuff, but I'm using H4350 with the Berger 215s.

Just to toss another powder in the mix, cfe 223 gives me good accuracy and speed to boot! I didn't do much more than start from listed minimum up to max and got 3/4 moa 20 shots! Little tuning would shrink that down I'm sure

i have found benchmark working well in mine as well. but favorites are 1.varget 2.imr4064 3.imr4895. fed210's or wlr's.

Hello

I to have a 308 Winchester that likes 4064 (42 to 44 Grs) with 168 & 175 Sierra MK (of course).

I switched to Federal 210 and 215 primers in ALL my larger (large rifle and mag) cases when I started to get "hangfires" in some of my 1000 yard Match guns while using the CCI Benchrest primers. Many years ago A top gunsmith at Williamsport advised not using the CCI because of that reason. I gave away ALL my CCIs at that point. Never had the problem once I switched to Federal. I do use some Winchester primers at times.

I use Winchester WLR primers for years. I tried CCI and had some problems with some them not firing. Powder RL-15 and IMR 4320 with WLR primers. If you are worried about temp's RL-15 is suppose to be temp stabile.

When I started loading for the .308 a few years ago IMR4064 was on sale along with CCI Benchrest Primers, so I bought both of those. I've used that combo for 168gr, 175gr, 185gr, and 190gr with great success. For the 168gr my rifle liked Dan Newberry's OCW load of 42.8. This load was sub MOA out of three different rifles and less than one half MOA in two of those rifles.

Recently I also tried RL15 with some 155gr SMK's - wow, great combo as well.

The 308 is so easy to load for - all of them that I've played with will accurately digest a lot of different powders and bullets.

good luck,
Ross
