Porting a barrel instead of a muzzle brake?

I just noticed in my last post I typed "flukes" instead of "flutes". Right before I typed it up I was working with a company called Fluke on their computer networking testing equipment. Freudian slip I suppose.

Dr Vette, I got the brake from Ross Schuler. Very impressed! I just mailed him a check for $35 along with the details of the brake I wanted. He made it for me within a couple days and I had it within a week. I'm just not used to that kind of turn around time in this industry.

For the actual work on the barrel, I mailed that off to Pierce Engineering in Lansing. I also mailed them the brake at the same time. They had it back to me within 2 weeks. Which I was VERY pleased with considering we are so close to deer season here in Michigan.

I think because of the 18 inch barrel + the larger diameter of the caliber + the pressures that the 460S&W Mag produces; apparently this is brutal to anyone near me when I'm shooting it. I don't notice much shooting it myself and I have a habit of always doubling up on my ear protection.

There was a guy also shooting last night 4 stalls away from me. He moved all the way to the other side of the shooting lane and said it was the loudest gun he has ever heard. And that the concussion coming from it is ridiculous.

There were also 2 guys shooting trap last night about 100+ yards away. They came over to the rifle range "just to see what the hell somebody was shooting over there".

I'm going to have to let someone else shoot it soon and I'll be a bystandard just to see what the fuss is all about.

Thanks. I've driven by Pierce, but have not used them. The price seems very reasonable as well as the turnaround time.

Ross is a great guy and makes a very solid product and you can't beat his service. I know of literally dozens of people who have done business with him and I have yet to ever hear a negative comment about his work.

Years ago here one guy was complaining because Ross was slow and hadn't returned his calls for like a week or two and we then learned he or his son, can't remember which for sure had been badly injured in an ATV accident. With him having turned out hundreds of brakes for people over the years along with his other work that's a great record. He used to post here occasionally but I haven't seen him around the forum for some time but I'm sure he's still doing the same good work as always.
