Whew-wee you guys have some nice rifles !

The reason i mentioned making the gun way heavy is to beat back the recoil -i am trying to not use a brake on the gun.
How heavy '"ballpark guess" would a 338 edge shooting a 300gr bullet need to be to have recoil similar to a sporterweight 270 w/130gr bullets ?

And what size barrel contour and length can a chrome moly remington action support ?
If i could use a 30" sendero contour -i could just forget the barrel block thoughts.

I bet you guys use your rifles to pick up chicks -laf.

Mike, the 338 Edge sounds like what you are looking for if you need to stay with a 700 action. The Edge will not leave you "lacking" in the thumping dept. As far as how heavy the rifle needs to be to get you in the recoil areas you want W/O a brake I don't know. I'm sure someone here can give you a number but there are still other things to consider when going with no brake. Even in a heavy rifle (13 lbs +) 300 g bullets at 2800 + fps the muzzle jump will keep you from being able to see your impacts. My 13.5 lb edge has a Hollands brake and the felt recoil is still above the recoil area you are hoping for. With the brake it still takes a 600 or more shot with the scope no higher than 12x or so to see impacts. If seeing your shot is important you might consider this. on top of this you will most likely shoot the Edge better with a brake regardless of recoil tolerance.

One other thing is there is a considerable difference in felt recoil between shooting the 250 and 300 g bullets. My unbraked 10 lb 338 RUM shooting 250's is more pleasant to shoot, by a margin, than my 13.5 lb Edge shooting 300g at 2850 with the brake removed. Good luck with whatever you decide to build!

Building a 338 w 300gr slugs and no brake is silly. I had a edge that weighed over 20 that still beat you up without a brake. With a brake its ababy. An edge will never kick like a 270. It may not kick but the kick with a heavy braked 338 is DIFFERENT than a lightweight 270. Much slower impulse and easier to control. I love my 22lb edge but its not a packin gun. Put a brake on it. Edges throw out more energy with 300 grs than an "elephant gun".

My 338 Norma is 7-2 OZ. BARE AND 8 3/4 dressed to kill. With brake it kicks less than my factory 325 wsm no brake, A bolt. It has way less flip and I can spot most of my own shot, struggle for same with 325. I shoot Norma one hand, and wsm w/ 2 hands and it still is harder to control.

Going to go w/a brake also i just can't shoot a hard recoiling rifle accurately .

What does "No Sneak" weight as is? i think when i shoot the barrel out of my 338 im going to put a straight tube (no taper) 30" on it and a heavy A5 to balance it out. Also what are the colors on that A5? I like it a lot.

It's not really super heave its 12 lbs as is, but it packs a heavy punch if your on the north end of the barrel. 338 Lapua build on a 700 action with a fluted Krieger #6. recoil is minimal, my sister insists its the only gun she uses now days, and she has 5 of her own.

Good choice. Life has left me with ½ the use of my right arm as well as a 75% loss of hearing in my left ear=Dont be that guy!! A brake(just make sure there are no holes on the bottom) is loud but it takes a lot of weight to make up the differance. Ear protection is a great idea anyway!!

I was shooting my 223 Ruger VT the day this pic was taken. With its long barrel I usually dont ware ear plugs. There was a couple prairie dogs standing tall right at a mile so I got behind the 50bmg but forgot to put my plugs back in my ears=BAD MISTAKE!!

Its a States Arms 50 BMG... I think it was Klauses SWAT madel? Made somewhere in the mid 80s.

Mike, The pic does not show it, but this tube has taper. The rifle as is with bipod and no ammo weighs 15 1/2 lbs. Tube is 27 1/2" The colors are Olive, black and gray. I dont remember the percentages but a guess would be 70 olive and 15 , 15 on blk and gray.

I just took a badger with her @ 632 yards in a farm field. All I can say is, a badger is not very tall and the 300 Berger cleaned his clock. And Mike, it was indeed a complete pass through with a dual blood trail. However it was a short trail.
